Quality 16 Free Morning Movies - Canceled for Spring 2020

Quality 16’s Free Morning Movies Not Returning for Spring 2020

Spread the love

For many years, Quality 16 has provided Ann Arbor Free Movies with their Morning Movie Series every fall and spring. The series is not returning for Spring 2020.

End of Free Matinees

On February 25 I reached out and asked about the 2020 schedule since it has traditionally started the first weekend of March. They replied with the following:

We are no longer offering spring or fall movies due to very limited selections after the Disney/Fox acquisition. We will be offering a series in the summer. More info to come on that.

Personally, I am hoping that the loss of Fox movies will allow them to include more live action movies and also some older movies this summer.

More to the Story – Updated February 28

I appears that there is more to the story. Goodrich Theaters filed for Bankruptcy on February 28. I have wondered how they have been competing in the Ann Arbor market with Emagine and Cinemark having better amenities and comparable ticket prices. Last time I was at Quality 16 they had not upgraded to recliners.

Ann Arbor Free Movies: History

My daughter is 14 and I remember taking her to Quality 16 free weekend matinees at 3 or 4. I think the first movie we saw in the series was Monsters vs Aliens which was released in spring 2009. We probably saw it as part of the Fall 2009 series.

Last summer, free and discounted movies were offered by Quality 16, Emagine, and Cinemark. Quality 16 has stated that their summer program will be back for 2020. Hopefully the changes will still bring back the Emagine and Cinemark Programs

Discounted Movie Options

There are other ways to watch movies for less.

Michigan Theater – Family Friendly Film Series

Be on the lookout for the Family-Friendly Film Series at the Michigan Theater. Children ages 12 & under receive free admission. There are currently (February 25, 2020) no upcoming movies in the series, but we try to keep them updated on our calendar.

No Events

Emagine – $5 Ticket Tuesdays

Emagine offers $5 Tickets all day on Tuesdays for Emagine Rewards members. In addition, Emagine Rewards members get free popcorn. It is free to join Emagine Rewards if you are not a member yet. We love seeing movies at Emagine with their comfortable recliners.

Note, the $5 ticket price does not apply to opening week of new films or 3D movies.

Cinemark Discount Tuesdays

Cinemark also offers their members discount tickets on Tuesday. Regular tickets are $5 with upcharges for specialty shows like 3D and IMAX.

Quality 16 – Lowest Price Ticket Tuesdays

Movies are just $6 all day on Tuesday.

Tuesday Discount Ticket Overview

Emagine is the best choice with $5 tickets, free popcorn, and recliners. Cinemark is the second best choice with $5 tickets and recliners and more screens than Emagine. But, Quality 16 has more screens and offers more options.

  1. The Monster Truck movie isn’t animated. I wasn’t sure about it at first but it was ok. More geared toward older kids, My 2yo was bored. Rob Lowe plays a mean businessman.

  2. Good to know – I’ll update the post. The poster everyone use makes it look animated. Obviously not one that ever interested us – and it kind of flew under the radar when it was released.
