Celebrate Juneteenth in Ann Arbor

Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19. In recent years, events honoring Juneteenth have increased and several camps have chosen to treat the day as a holiday.

Juneteenth is a celebration of African American freedom from slavery dating back to June 19th, 1865 when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas.

What’s Closed on Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a designated Federal Holiday. It is also a holiday in the state of Michigan. Expect government offices, banks, and the postal service to be closed. We’ll keep watching for more announcements of closures.

What’s Open on Juneteenth

While it is a federal and state holiday, it is not to the level of closure as New Years, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. It’s schedule is more similar to MLK Day, Presidents Day, and Indigenous Peoples Day.
