When my daughter was in 8th grade, I realized that I had as many questions about finding a high school as I did for Kindergarten. There are even differences among the 3 Ann Arbor Public Schools comprehensive high schools
School of Choice & In District Transfer
Many of the local school districts offer School of Choice. School of Choice allows students living outside the district to enroll.
In District Transfers are only offered at Ann Arbor Public Schools. The other local districts only have a single high school.
Ann Arbor Public Schools
Enrollment at Community High School is by lottery and only for those living in the Ann Arbor school district. In order to enter the lottery, both a parent and student must attend an Information Session.
In-District Transfer allows district residents to attend Huron, Pioneer, and Skyline if it is not their zoned school. School of choice allows non-district residents to attend Ann Arbor Public Schools.
There are typically several windows for In-District Transfer/School of Choice. At the close of each window, applicants are notified of their assignment. It is always best to apply in the early rounds. My daughter’s guidance counselor warned us that Pioneer was the only high school to reach capacity before the last in district transfer/school of choice window. Also, note that for the 2020-2021 COVID changed the in-district transfer & school of choice windows. I was glad we had applied in the first round before COVID
The 2023-2024 windows have not been announced yet (December 13, 2022). These were the 2022-2023 windows:
- In District Transfer Only
- January 10-February 14 – Young Fives Kindergarten, 9th & 10th at Pioneer, Skyline, & Huron, and IB-11th grade at Huron
- February 28-April 1 – The above (pending availability) plus Elementary, Middle School, K-8 STEAM
- In-District Transfer & School of Choice
- May 2-May 31 – Same as above pending availability
Other Public School Districts
- Dexter openings to be determined in January 2023. Their first window for Fall 2023 is February 15-28, 2023
- Saline – 2023-2024 School of Choice window is tentatively April-May 2023. Please fill out interest form.
- Ypsilanti – School of Choice for winter 2022-2023 open October 6, 2022-February 8, 2023. 2023-2024 information not yet available
- Lincoln – School of Choice for 2022-2023 open April 1, 2022-February 8, 2023. 2023-2024 information not yet available
- Milan – Currently open for second semester 2022-2023 (December 1, 2022-January 27, 2023). 2022-2023 school of choice opened April 1, 2022.
- Whitmore Lake – 2022-2023 Information still on website with no dates listed

High School Information Sessions
Attending an Open House or Information Session is one of the best ways to learn about a high school. Several high schools also offer the opportunity for an 8th grader to shadow a freshman. My friends whose kids have shadowed a student highly recommend it.
