When the kids are trick or treating, it’s always good to keep a few rules in mind.
- An adult should accompany kids under 12 – but please don’t creep along behind them in the car. Park the car and get out and walk. Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine.
- Don’t go into houses of people you don’t know
- Skip houses without their lights on
- Be careful cutting across yards especially those with lit Halloween decorations that may have cords across the yard. Use the sidewalks/driveways when possible.
- Make sure the kids dress for the weather – layers under their costume for cold weather.
- If your residence is’t conducive to trick or treating (apartments, rural areas, no sidewalks), meet up with a friend in their trick or treat friendly neighborhood
A few tips for those who are handing out treats
- Turn your porch light off if you aren’t participating
- Be ready by the door
- Have non-candy treats for those with allergies (or everyone) – Check out the Teal Pumpkin Project for a selection of printable door signs.
- Don’t invite kids inside
- Be welcoming to all trick or treaters – including the teens, out of neighborhood kids, and those who may be non-verbal or struggling with the sensory overflow of trick or treating.
Indoor Halloween
You can check out our list of indoor Halloween options. Fortunately the rain has left the forecast, but maybe the kids don’t like the chilly temperatures.

Don’t worry if your kids collect too much Halloween candy (or you end up with too many leftovers if the rain drives down the number of trick or treaters at your door). Let the kids save a reasonable amount of candy, then pass it along through one of these programs.
