Daytime Halloween Events

If your kids aren’t in school full time, there are several day time trick or treat events. My daughter and I loved the Main Street Area Halloween Treat Parade. It is ending earlier this year – at 3p. Previously it ran until 5p – last year my daughter and friends went after school (as 7th graders). We always started at the library party. This year the library has two sessions – from 10-10:30a and from 11:30a-noon.

Downtown Dexter will also have trick or treat at downtown businesses from 9a-4p with additional business and the Chamber of Commerce in Monument Park from 1-4p. Additionally, Ruby’s Makery is holding a Not-So-Spooky Halloween Party (Advance registration is required).

Halloween Food

We’re used to eating a late dinner, so it is always a struggle to fit dinner in before trick or treat. There are several places that offer free or discounted meals on Halloween. Over the years we’ve taken advantage of several offers. At 13, my daughter has aged out of kids meals, but there are still plenty of offers that she is eligible for.

Trick or Treat Information

Did you know that most local municipalities have set or recommended Trick or Treat Times? We’ve got all of the information here. Of course, pay attention to any local recommendations from your own neighborhood.

Ann Arbor Trick or Treat Times

The early Halloween weather forecast is looking iffy. It is scheduled to be in the 30s & 40s with a 90% chance of rain early in the day and a 60% chance later in the day. Hopefully the rain stays away. Check out our suggestions for Rainy Day Halloween Costumes.

Costume Ideas for a Rainy Halloween

When the kids are trick or treating, it’s always good to keep a few rules in mind.

  1. An adult should accompany kids under 12 – but please don’t creep along behind them in the car. Park the car and get out and walk. Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine.
  2. Don’t go into houses of people you don’t know
  3. Skip houses without their lights on
  4. Be careful cutting across yards especially those with lit Halloween decorations. Use the sidewalks/driveways when possible.
  5. Make sure the kids dress for the weather – layers under their costume for cool weather.
  6. If your residence is’t conducive to trick or treating (apartments, rural areas, no sidewalks), meet up with a friend in their trick or treat friendly neighborhood

A few tips for those who are handing out candy

  1. Turn your porch light off if you aren’t participating
  2. Be ready by the door
  3. Have non-candy treats for those with allergies (or everyone) – Check out the Teal Pumpkin Project for a selection of printable door signs.
  4. Don’t invite kids inside
  5. Be welcoming to all trick or treaters – including the teens, out of neighborhood kids, and those who may be non-verbal or struggling with the sensory overflow of trick or treating.

After Halloween

Don’t worry if your kids collect too much Halloween candy (or you end up with too many leftovers). We are still updating our list of Candy Take Back programs around town. Let the kids save a reasonable amount of candy, then pass it along through one of these programs. Check back on Friday for the latest list, 2019 events are still being announced.
