Parents, join social worker and educator Andrea Krueger for a four-part series. Hear new reading research and learn how and what to read to your child, ages 3-7, to build literacy skills at home. Snacks are provided, along with a free book to take home to read to your child, each session.
- Feb. 4: The Who, What, Where, Why, and How of Reading to Children. Hear research supporting the importance of parents reading aloud to their child at home, and learn reading-aloud tips and tricks to make the most of your reading time.
- Feb. 11: Reading Fundamentals. Why building pre-reading skills and modeling reading at home before kids start school is important, and what knowledge and reading skills you need to know to teach your pre- or emergent reader, including phonics, vocabulary, background knowledge, sight words, and early writing.
- Feb. 18: Where to Access Children’s Books. Take a tour of the Ypsilanti District Library and get instructions on how to use the catalog to find the right books for building literacy.
- Feb. 25: How to Build a Library at Home and Create a Home Reading Environment. Learn how to build a children’s home library and how to create reading spaces at home. Book lists that focus on pre- and early reading skills will be provided.
