Storm Damage Updates - April 15 - a tree is down across the road

Ann Arbor Power Outage Resources for April 15

That was quite the storm that came through Ann Arbor in the early hours of April 15, 2026. Our family was lucky that it went between our house (near 94 & 23) and our daughter’s apartment (UM North Campus area). Still there are numerous power outages and storm damage in the area.

Hopefully you have been as lucky – and aren’t without power needing to do your taxes today. I submitted ours yesterday, but still have to submit my daughter’s.

School Closures

Ann Arbor Public Schools, Ypsilanti Community Schools, and Milan Area Schools are closed on Wednesday, April 15. The AAPS statement indicates that several AAPS buildings have incurred structural damage. There are also numerous power outages and the district fiber is out (no phones, no fire notification, building security systems don’t work, etc). The downed lines and trees, water main breaks and gas leaks make travel across town dangerous for buses and walkers.

Ann Arbor Public Schools Facebook Post with text:
"The Ann Arbor Public Schools will be closed today, Wednesday, April 15, due to a district-wide fiber outage affecting all schools and district offices. The outage impacts all of our school's phone systems, camera systems, building access, and fire notification, suppression, and safety systems. The status of afterschool activities will be assessed later in the day.
Additionally, some of our schools have sustained structural damage from the storm, and many schools are also without power. Safe passage for walkers and buses is compromised across much of the city due to downed power lines, flooding, water main breaks, gas leaks, and felled trees and debris.
AAPS is working with the City of Ann Arbor’s Emergency Operations Center, receiving updates on damage across the city that may continue to impact the safe operations of schools. As we assess damage to the schools, we will keep you informed regarding the status of our school buildings.
Please be cautious, as many roads and walkways are blocked by trees and downed power lines." and an image that says Ann Arbor Public Schools - Lead, Care, Inspire - in white on a blue background trimmed in a gold box with 3 chalk images- star on light blue, heart on red, and an exclamation point on yellow.

Ypsilanti Community Schools and Milan Area Schools are both reporting building damage after the storms as the reason for closure.

Hopefully, the damaged schools are not too badly damaged and will reopen tomorrow or Friday. Or hopefully they can make a plan for alternate locations. In 2016-2017, Allen was damaged by a water main that burst underneath the school. For 8 months, they temporarily moved to Ypsilanti’s West Middle School. Hopefully the damage is not as severe at any of the buildings this time

Power Outages

99.24% across DTE have power, but the outages seem to be concentrated in our area.

It seems every time I check the map the number with power ticks down a few hundredths of a percent. Definitely moving in the wrong direction, but maybe they need to take down a small section to make repairs.

Who’s Open

I have seen confirmation that the following locations are open with power:

I checked through the events listed on the event calendar for today. And adjusted events.

Confirmed Closures

  • Veterans Park – The ice arena lost a wall in the storm. While it was already closed for the season, the entire park is closed due to additional damage and debris through the park and athletic fields.
  • The Neutral Zone follows AAPS weather closures and is closed this afternoon.
  • 242 Community Church/Center is closed today.

Power Outage Resources

The libraries are great for keeping cool, charging devices, and getting internet.

Dry Ice

Are you looking to get dry ice for your refrigerator and freezer?

Washtenaw Dairy is the first choice for many residents – plus you can get some delicious donuts while you are there. They have posted that they have power and dry ice, but lost one of the trees out front (into the street away from the building).

Cayman Chemical offers pickup of dry ice pellets. Order it on their website and it will be ready for pickup. Pickup is available Monday-Friday from 8a-4p.

Meijer offers dry ice, although they don’t always have it in stock.

Charging Devices

Make sure you have a cord to charge your phone from your car if you are driving anywhere today. Libraries and coffee shops are great places to charge your devices. We have also met my husband for lunch near his office and given him our devices to charge while we eat.

Don’t forget if you charge your laptop you can use it to recharge phones and tablets at home.
