As spring approaches the sap is flowing in the maple trees and it is time to make maple syrup. Check out our list of Southeast Michigan Maple Sugaring Events. At these events you’ll learn about the process, see the taps, and observe the sugar shack. Most events will let you sample the syrup – and many even include a pancake breakfast option.

Make sure to come home with some maple syrup to top your pancakes. We also love using maple syrup on salmon.

There are a couple of big Michigan Maple Syrup Festivals. Unfortunately none are near the Ann Arbor area. But, if you are willing to travel, check out the following:

Maple Sugar Festival
- Dates: Saturday, March 8
- Location: Kalamazoo Nature Center
- Activities: pancake breakfast, maple sugar tours, live music, children’s crafts, story trail, wagon rides, animal ambassadors, and more

Michigan Maple Sugaring On Your Own

Don’t worry if the maple syrup events don’t fit your schedule. This year the Huron-Clinton Metroparks brings back their self-guided maple sugaring hikes for the entire month of March.

First up in the sugaring process is tapping maple trees for sap collection. The sap is collected and taken to a sugaring house. The sap is boiled to remove water and increase the sugar content of the liquid. Finally, the liquid is filtered.
