Review of Fun Friday Night at UM Natural History Museum

Tonight our family went to Fun Friday Night at the UM Natural History Museum. Since my husband works at UM, we met for dinner at Chipotle on State St then headed to the Museum.

We arrived in time for the 7p story time. We had to get tickets (free) in the gift shop. Fortunately my daughter was happy exploring the fossils and the computer quiz in the rotunda so she wasn’t trying to talk us into buying her things as she usually does in museum stores.

We had to head straight to the planetarium to make it for story time. Pictures from the story were projected on the planetarium ceiling as the story was told. Very cool-except when they were behind our head. My daughter enjoyed the story, How Do Dinosaurs Go To School? by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague. The story was short, and it would have been nice to have a second story as well.

After our story time, the story teller was about to lead a dinosaur tour which my daughter wanted to join. Most of the group had come from the story time. As a first grader, my daughter was the oldest one in our group and already knew a lot of what was covered in the tour. I would hope with an older group that they would cover more detailed information.

I was surprised that my daughter was one of the older kids there. I understood that the story time was geared towards younger kids and that our tour consisted mostly of kids from story time. But even as we walked through the museum, I did not see many school-aged kids. I know we did not stay very late since it had been a long first week of school for my daughter.

Overall, I recommend the Fun Friday Nights at the UM Natural History Museum.
