High School Information Sessions

Attending an Open House is one of the best ways to learn about a high school. Several high schools offer the opportunity for an 8th grader to shadow a freshman. My friends whose kids have done this highly recommend it. They do book quickly so make sure to book early.

Lotteries, In-District Transfer & School of Choice

Ann Arbor Public Schools

Lotteries are used for Ann Arbor Open (K-8) and Community High School. Both schools are in high demand. In-District Transfer allows district residents to apply to a school other than their home school. School of choice allows non-district residents to attend Ann Arbor Public Schools.

For the 2026-2027 School Year, AAPS has moved the dates for the first window of In District Transfer (Young 5s, and High School) up by a month. I do like the new dates because it will hopefully minimize the impact of weather canceling information sessions.

There are typically several windows for In-District Transfer and School of Choice. At the close of each window, applicants are notified of their assignment. It is always best to apply in the early rounds. I know my daughter’s guidance counselor said that in 2019-2020 Pioneer was the only one of the 3 comprehensive high schools to close to transfers. COVID did change the procedures for IDT and School of Choice, so we recommend applying as early as possible.

AAPS Only accepts applications for IDT & School of Choice in the spring for the following year.

  • In District Transfer Only
    • (Dates for 2026-2027 school year) November 18, 2025-January 6, 2026 – Young Fives Kindergarten, 9th & 10th at Pioneer, Skyline, & Huron, and IB-11th grade at Huron
    • (Anticipated 2026-2027 dates) March 3-31, 2026. (Dates for 2025-2026 school year) February 25-March 31, 2025 – Definitely grades K-8, Likely Y5s & grades 9-11
  • School of Choice Only
    • (Dates for 2026-2027 school year) April 14-May 13 – Last year In-District Transfers were also accepted at this window. No announcement on IDT for this window in 2026-2027
