When my daughter was in 8th grade, I realized that I had as many questions about finding a high school as I did for Kindergarten. There are even differences among the 3 Ann Arbor Public Schools comprehensive high schools
Lotteries, In-District Transfer & School of Choice
Ann Arbor Public Schools
Lotteries are used for Ann Arbor Open (K-8) and Community High School. Both schools are in high demand. In-District Transfer allows district residents to apply to a school other than their home school. School of choice allows non-district residents to attend Ann Arbor Public Schools.
There are typically several windows for In-District Transfer and School of Choice. At the close of each window, applicants are notified of their assignment. It is always best to apply in the early rounds. I know my daughter’s guidance counselor said that in 2019-2020 Pioneer was the only one of the 3 comprehensive high schools to close to transfers. COVID did change the procedures for IDT and School of Choice, so we recommend applying as early as possible.
As of January 8, only the First In-District Transfer Window has been announced. Details on that and 2024-2025 dates for future windows are below:

- January 7-February 13, 2025 – Young Fives Kindergarten, 9th & 10th at Pioneer, Skyline, & Huron, and IB-11th grade at Huron
- (Dates for 2024-2025 school year) February 26-March 29, 2024 – Young 5s-10th plus IB at Huron for 11th
- In-District Transfer & School of Choice
- (Dates for 2024-2025 school year) April 16-May 10 – Young 5s-10th plus IB at Huron for 11th
- School of Choice Only
- (Dates for 2024-2025 school year) May 29-June 27
- (Dates for 2024-2025 school year) July 25-August 8

- Dexter February 17-28 & July 14-28, 2025 for 2025- – Young 5-8th grade, high school only for IB program
- Ypsilanti – School of Choice for winter 2024-2025 open October 3, 2024-February 12, 2025. 2025-2026 information not yet available
- Lincoln – School of Choice for winter 2024-2025 open through February 12, 2025. No 2025-2026 information yet.
- Milan – School of Choice for winter 2024-2025 open through January 24, 2025. No 2025-2026 information yet.
- Whitmore Lake – 2025-2026 Information not currently available
Many of the local school districts offer School of Choice. School of Choice allows students living outside the district to enroll.
In District Transfers are only offered at Ann Arbor Public Schools. The other local districts only have a single high school.
High School Information Sessions
Attending an Open House or Information Session is one of the best ways to learn about a high school. Several high schools also offer the opportunity for an 8th grader to shadow a freshman. My friends whose kids have shadowed a student highly recommend it.
