Will Wednesday, January 20 be a Snow Day?

We don’t know yet. As of 3p, the winter weather advisory is predicting 1-3p between 3a & 1p. With the decision typically made between 5 & 6a, my guess is school will be cancled unless the forcast shifts before then.

As of 3p, Snow Day Calculator gives it a 66% chance and Snow Day Predictor is at 65%

Will There be an Ann Arbor Snow Day?

When the first forecast for snow comes, kids start eagerly watching the forecast for a snow day. Parents, meanwhile may be watching it with more trepidation as they plan for school closures or possibly getting everyone around safely if school does not close.

Have you checked out Snow Day Calculator? I love checking for predictions.

With 13 years of experience as an Ann Arbor Public Schools parent, I have some insight into what AAPS will and will not do. But, with my daughter having graduated, I don’t receive notices from the district anymore.

School Closure Procedures

The first thing to check on a snowy day is for school closures. ClickOnDetroit.com is a great resource for a comprehensive list of school closures.

The more complicated situation is what happens when snow arrives during the school day. A few years ago they did close school early. That was a logistical nightmare. I know our school required everyone to confirm what to do with their elementary school student who rode the bus. Even as someone who picked up their child, they still asked us to confirm receiving the message. My guess is that they try to avoid this situation.

Snow Day Camps

Historically, there have been a few camps that ran camp on snow days.

PandaFit and Future Innovators Academy often offer snow day child care. It might be worth getting on their mailing lists and following them on social media for early notice of future Snow Day opportunities. We have linked their Facebook pages where they made announcements last time.

In the past I believe Wide World Sports hosted snow day camps, but I called last year and they were not. Flipside Art Camps used to, but they are no longer around. If you know of any other snow day camps, please let us know.

If you have to get to work, you can also check with a neighbor or with your child’s friends – especially if you just need care for a meeting, appointment, teaching a class, etc. I have definitely done this on snow days in the past.

At Home Preparation

When I see a storm coming, one of my concerns is always losing power. I typically assess the weather conditions and decide if it is likely to cause a power outage – heavy snow or icing especially combined with wind can cause power breaks.

To prepare for a power outage, I override our programmable thermostat so it doesn’t drop the temperature overnight or during the day when everyone is gone. This way if we do lose power, we are starting at the “comfort” temperature instead of the lower “eco” temperature.

We try to make sure our devices are fully charged – phones, tablets, laptops, battery packs. Hint – you can charge your phone a couple of times using your laptop.

The good news is with snow on the ground and frigid temperatures it is easy to keep refrigerator and freezer items cold. With a gas stove, I can also still cook food on the stovetop.

Sledding Hills

A snow day is typically the perfect day for sledding – just pick one near home or wait for the roads to improve.

Before heading out anywhere, check the traffic map and for places that are closed. We will typically have a snow day closure article to help plan your day.

With fairly mild conditions that cleared quickly, I don’t expect many closures for December 12.

Activity Suggestions
