Join AADL for a presentation on the art of illumination (tahzib), with NY based artist Behnaz Karjoo. Tazhib, often called Islamic illumination, is a traditional, intricate art form focused on decorating manuscripts, calligraphic texts, and, historically, Qur’ans using gold paint, gold leaf, and vibrant natural pigments. Derived from the Arabic word zahab (gold), it translates to “gilding”. Behnaz Karjoo began her practice and earned her ijazah, a certificate of mastery in illumination in 2016 under a distinguished master in Turkish illumination. Behnaz Karjoo holds the belief that while classical arts have a timeless foundation, their potential for innovation and growth is boundless.
This event is in partnership with Reed Society for the Sacred Arts.
For teens & adults. Held in 4th Floor Program Room.
