Disclosure: Zap Zone hosted my daughter and I to check out their new Virtual Reality offerings. All opinions are our own.
Zap Zone has closed their Carpenter Rd Ann Arbor location and opened up Best in Games. Best in Games does not have a VR room similar to this one.
This summer Zap Zone Ann Arbor replaced their Cannon Blaster room with a new Virtual Reality room. My daughter was thrilled with Zap Zone hosted us to try out the new activities.
Zap Zone Virtual Reality
Zap Zone has added two different Virtual Reality options. They offer a ride in the main arcade. There is also a room which has 5 Virtual Reality stations and a wide variety of video games for kids waiting their turn.
Zap Zone Virtual Reality Ride
The Virtual Reality Ride offers two egg-shaped pods to embark on a ride. My daughter rode a virtual roller coaster. The staff helps you get in the pod, buckles you in, fits you with a virtual reality head set, and makes sure you find the handles. During the ride, the pod moves in conjunction with the video.
In addition to the virtual roller coaster, they have several other options. I wish they had a monitor so I could see what she was seeing.
Zap Zone Virtual Reality Room
The Zap Zone Virtual Reality Room offers 5 stations for Virtual Reality. There is also a wall of past and present game consoles for kids (and adults) to use while waiting for the VR stations to be available. We’re a Nintendo house, so my daughter was thrilled to see a Switch and old school Nintendo consoles.
We visited at dinner time on a school day, so ZapZone was not crowded. My daughter was able to get started right away on a Virtual Reality station.
The week before, I was at ZapZone for a meeting and tested the VR system. I loved Fruit Ninja, so my daughter wanted to start with Fruit Ninja. With Fruit Ninja, you hold two “swords” and have to slash the fruit. It is quite the workout.
Next, she played some music. She was keeping the beat on either the right or left according to the on screen instructions.
Finally, she tried out a job simulator. She chose to be a short order cook and was fulfilling orders such as for eggs here. It took a little while to get used to the tricks of the game. Some of the instructions required some ingenuity – like knowing to use the flower as flour.
Visiting ZapZone
ZapZone Location and Hours
ZapZone’s address is 4177 Carpenter Rd, Ypsilanti.
ZapZone’s current hours are:
- Monday-Thursday 4-10p
- Friday 1p-Midnight
- Saturday 10a-Midnight
- Sunday noon-10p
They typically extend their hours during summer and school breaks.
ZapZone Other Activities
The star attraction at ZapZone is Laser Tag. My daughter loves playing laser tag at Zap Zone.
They also offer bumper cars. And no visit is complete without a trip to the arcade. Last winter they switched the arcade from tokens and tickets to a card based system. The card is definitely easier to store between visits than a paper cup of tokens and ticket slips.
ZapZone Pricing
The Virtual Reality Ride is $6. The Virtual Reality Room is $8/10 minutes. Laser Tag is $8 an Bumper Cars are $4. You can also buy a combo pack of any 3 attractions for $18. I also suggest visiting on Tuesday for half priced attractions.
