Over the Top Milkshakes Near Ann Arbor

Several years ago, over the top milkshakes topped with candy, cookies, and more became all the rage. At the time, we shared milkshakes like that in Howell at M Street Bakery.

Milkshake Factory is a new milkshake restaurant in Ann Arbor. And there is. Christina’s Sweet Treats in Saline and Candy Coated Creamery in Ypsilanti. I found Candy Coated Creamery had the most over the top milkshakes, but also the least options.

Milkshake Factory Shakes - Three milkshakes on store counter. The one in the back is a not shake - Peanut Butter Meltaway Cookie Sundae. Others are Gourmet Shakes Confetti Frosted Cupcake and Salted Caramel Pretzel

When I first saw the Milkshake Factory signs go up in Westgate Shopping Center, I had high hopes for over the top milkshakes. While they offer gourmet milkshakes, their focus is on the shake itself and not the over the top toppings.

The Signature Milkshakes have fillings inside the shake, but are contained in the cup itself.

I ordered a Not Milkshake which is ice cream with toppings layered in it. Mine was Peanut Butter Meltaway Cookie Sunday. My daughter had a Confetti Frosted Cupcake shake, and my husband had Salted Caramel Pretzel milkshake.

While not overflowing with toppings these milkshakes were easier to drink and we didn’t have to worry about treats falling off.

I wish they would add some outdoor seating. The restaurant was very loud inside.

Christina’s Sweet Treats

Chocolate milkshake with edge of rim coated in fudge with cookie dough bites encircling the rim, shake is topped with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and a large cookie

Christina’s Sweet Treats offers several fancy milkshake options. My daughter and I opted to share a chocolate chip cookie dough milk shake.

The milkshake was a manageable size (16 oz). The cup is yours to keep, but you will save money on your next shake if you bring it back clean.

We thought the milkshake was a half-way point between a regular milkshake and an over the top milkshake. There was only the cookie dough bites on the rim and one cookie. The cookie was also taken from either the fridge or freezer and was hard.

My husband enjoyed his Dole Whip – a definite treat. I was also intrigued by the idea of ice cream nachos. But, on this visit we were on a mission to get the milkshake.

I tried the ice cream nachos on a subsequent visit. I loved the combo of waffle cone chips with ice cream, but not having to worry about a dripping cone. It is also much easier to share.

Candy Coated Creamery

Address: 1076 N Huron River Drive, Ypsilanti
Hours (July 2024): Thursdays-Saturdays 2-10p, Wednesdays & Sundays 2-8p. Closed Mondays & Tuesdays
Other Specialty Treats: Ice Cream Nachos, Sundaes, Cheesecake, and more
Seating: No
Operating Season: Opened June 2024,

Candy Coated Creamery offers two signature Candy Coated Shakes – Oreo Overload or Strawberry Crunch.

My daughter and I shared an Oreo Overload shake. It was a great size (20 oz) to share. We each got an Oreo, the Oreo Ice Cream sandwich was easy to share. Our only problem was the Cakester (chocolate cake with filling). It was on a spear and fell to the ground after we each had one bite. The shake was a great size to share.

My husband went with a plain caramel shake – vanilla icing and caramel syrup. He enjoyed his shake.

Our only complaint is that Candy Coated Creamery does not have any seating. The Candy Coated Shake was not one we could easily take in the car – and too much potential for a mess to drink in the car. We ended up enjoying it while standing outside. But it would have been much easier if there had been a table for us to use.

Candy Coated Creamery just opened in June 2024, so we hope to see them add outdoor seating.

The original Fancy milkshakes in the area are from M Street Baking. It’s been a few years since we visited, but their menu still lists the two varieties we had. They offer more varieties than either of the closer options, but are more of a drive.

Over the Top Milkshakes at M Street Baking Co

Over the top milkshakes become so popular in the late 2010s. At the time, most of the local posts came from M Street Baking Co in Howell. For Spring Break 2019, my daughter and I went on a day trip to Whiting Forest’s Canopy Walk and added a slight detour for these extreme milkshakes on […]
