Make a Splash at Leslie Science & Nature Center

The waterplay section of the Nature Playscape at the Leslie Science & Nature Center has opened. It is perfect timing with summer fast approaching.

This morning I visited the playscape to check out the new section. While I was there the landscaping crew was busy planting new flowers on the hill below the playscape.

Water Play

As I walked up to the empty play area, my first impression was the water area was dry! Not a good start. But this is actually by design so there is no standing water.

There are pumps for the kids (or caregivers) to operate to add the water. The pumps are designed to be easy for kids of different ages and abilities to operate. They are at different heights with some feeding into basins that drain to the stream. Others feed directly to the stream.

In addition to the pumps, there are dams that will collect water in various smaller pools. The dams are easy for the kids to operate.

At the bottom of the river is a small pool area with a drain.

Nature Playscape

As we walked up to the Nature Playscape, we noticed a new addition – willow arches on the path below the playscape. These arches are currently wrapped in caution fencing to protect them as they take root.

There were also new protective fences around grassy areas near the playscape. As I walked up, I was afraid the playscape was closed, but it was open.
