I grew up watching the classic Christmas specials on TV. Every year it would be the same ones and it was always priority to make sure you were available the night it aired. I was 9 when we got our first VCR (a BetaMax), so maybe we started recording them.
The classic specials have all been released on DVD and now BluRay. My husband and I already own many of them so that we can watch them on our schedule. If you do not own them and want to start a tradition with your family, you may want to consider purchasing them.
Today Amazon is running a GoldBox special on the The Original Christmas Classics available on both DVD
($12.99) and Blu-Ray ($19.49)
. This set includes Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman, and Frosty Returns. The DVD also includes Mr Magoos Christmas Carol, The Little Drummer Boy, and Cricket on the Hearth (yes, the DVD includes more shows).
I love this version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with Hermey the elf who wants to be a dentist, the Island of Misfit Toys, Yukon Cornelius, the Abominable Snow Monster, and my daughter’s favorite Clarice. When she was young I had mistakenly purchased a new retelling of this story as a musical in more of a claymation style. Definitely a disappointment that it wasn’t the original version included here.
Other Holiday Classics that we love are How the Grinch Stole Christmas (currently $10.99) and A Charlie Brown Christmas (currently $10.99). The Charlie Brown Christmas may be worth buying as Peanuts Holiday Collection Deluxe Edition (currently $20.49)
which also includes It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I love the Great Pumpkin!
