Event Description

The Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival (A2CAF) is a celebration of comics, graphic novels, and the people who love them. AADL hosts the 10th annual comics festival (formerly known as Kids Read Comics!) The Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival (A2CAF) will feature over 50 of your favorite artists and authors including Jerry Kraft, Lucy Knisley, Raul the Third,  Wendy and Richard Pini, Raina Telgemeier, Judd Winick, Joamette Gil,  and more!  Kids, teens, and adults can participate in over 25 awesome cartooning workshops and creative games. Kids can also vote in the seventh annual Kids’ Comics Awards, the only comics awards chosen by kids. The winners will be announced during a ceremony on Sunday afternoon featuring puppets, supervillains, and more!

Today’s Event Highlights:

  • 11a-noon – Iron Cartoonist – The stars of A2CAF battle for the title of Iron Cartoonist – at Downtown Library Multi-Purpose Room
  • noon-6p – Artists Alley – Meet Comic Artists, publishers, and more. There will be some material for sale, some giveaways – and lots of summer game codes
  • noon-12:30p – Quick Draw – at Ann Arbor Art Center, Robot Supply Shop, & 1st Floor of Downtown Library
  • noon-1p – Signing – Jerry Craft & Raúl The Third – at Downtown Library 1st Floor
  • noon-1:30p – Signing – Raina Telgemeier – at Vault of Midnight
  • 12:30-1:30p – Coloring Comics Digitally – Aaron Polk colorist of Dog Man, Hawking will show how comics are colored and you’ll get a chance to use the same tools – at Ann Arbor Art Center (limited seating)
  • 1-2p
    • Signing – Wendy & Richard Pini (Elfquest) at Downtown Library 1st Floor
    • The Shake Ups: Cartoon Adventure Hour Concert featuring 50 years of Scooby Doo – at Downtown Library Multi-Purpose Room
    • Sing a Song, Draw Along – Cartoonist Patrick Lay and musician James Michael Meadows to let music inspire drawing – at Ann Arbor Art Center
  • 1-3p Craft Your Way to Cosplay – local cosplayers from the League of Enchantment will guide kids through making your own cosplay outfit including foam cutting – Downtown Library Secret Lab
  • 1:45-2:45p – Signing Tory Woollcott, Alex Graudins, Jim Ottaviani, Jason Viola, and Zack Giallongo authors of First Second Science Comics at Vault of Midnight
  • 2-2:30p Quick Draw
    • Himashi Hewagama & Tara Kurtzhals – Robot Supply & Repair
    • Ruth McNally Barshaw & Chloe Cordero – Downtown Library 1st Floor
  • 2-3p Signing – Lucy Knisley (Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos) – at Downtown Library 1st Floor
  • 2:30-3:30p – The 12 Rules to Making Up a Story with Judd Winick (Hilo) – at Robot Supply & Repair
  • 3-4p – Jerry Craft Presentation – Author of New Kid shares his experiences growing up, finding his artist voice, and navigating a career in comics – Downtown Library Multi Purpose Room
  • 3-4p – Portfolio Review with Gina Gagliano – Publishing director at Random House Graphic will do a portfolio review of original art, mini-comics, or pitches. For teens & adults – Downtown Library 1st Floor
  • 3-4p – Make a Mini Comic with Jerzy Drozd – explore how cartoonists use shape, size, line, and color to write with images then make your own mini-comic – at Ann Arbor Art Center (limited seating)
  • 3:30-4:30p – Author Spotlight on Wendy & Richard Pini (masters of Elfquest series) – learn about their 40 year self-publishing history – for teens at Ann Arbor Art Center
  • 3:45-4:45p – Signing Judd Winick (Hilo) at Vault of Midnight
  • 4-5p – Signing Jerry Craft (New Kid) at Downtown Library Secret Lab
  • 4:45-5:45p Singing – Wendy & Richard Pini (Elfquest) at Vault of Midnight
  • 6-8p A2CAF Drink & Draw – Yes, this is an all ages event. There will be light refreshments and beverages and comic drawing – at Ann Arbor Art Center

There will also be Face Painting in the Youth Story Corner from noon-4p.
