LSNC Eagle at EMU

Thank You EMU Football For Giving Back to LSNC

From the community I want to give a big Thank You to the Easter Michigan Football Team for helping out Leslie Science & Nature Center by planting 50 trees. After establishing a relationship with the LSNC eagles who are frequent visitors to the team, it is great to see the team give back by planting trees.

Below you can see one of the EMU eagles soaring over the field prior to an Eastern Michigan Football Game.

EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL TEAM PLANTS TREES FOR LESLIE SCIENCE AND NATURE CENTER

On May 7, 2015 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) football team is leaving the Rynearson Stadium and visiting Leslie Science & Nature Center (LSNC), home of the bald eagle flown at last year’s home games. They are donating their time by planting 50 trees. These trees will support LSNC’s effort over the past year of removing non-native, invasive species by replacing them.

After four years visiting the players in the team building portion before games, the mature bald eagle amazed fans by flying during the national anthem at last year’s football games. Coaches and players will give back by trading weights, barbells and footballs for shovels, wheel barrows and wood chips.

“There is no way we could plant all of these trees without help from volunteers,” said Raptor Program Director Francie Krawcke.  “The planting that will take place will benefit the community, insects and other wild animals, including our mature bald eagle, by restoring native species that will help our ecosystem find its balance.”

The native trees to be planted were funded by a grant LSNC received from DTE Energy. The new plantings include Burr Oak, Tulip Tree, Red Berried Elder, Hazelnut and Ironwood. These will replace Honeysuckle and Buckthorn.  The native trees were chosen based on habitat needs and benefits to wildlife.

If you are interested in helping to plant trees feel free to contact LSNC at info@lesliesnc.org for more information.
