Do you know that each Sunday in December the Michigan Theater is running the Holiday Film Classics Series. Films are shown FREE of charge in the main theater.
Yesterday they were playing Miracle on 34th Street which is one of my favorite classic Christmas movies, so I decided to take my almost 8 year old to see the movie for the first time.
Since admission was free, there was no need to wait at the box office and we were able to go right in. We arrived about 1:10p and selected our seats before returning to the lobby to buy snacks. While we were waiting in line for snacks, we ran into friends of ours and decided to sit with them. The lobby was decorated for Christmas, so I was sure to take a picture of my daughter in front of the lobby tree.

In the lobby they also had information about the release of Miracle on 34th Street in 1947 including posters, copies of reviews, and more. I found it interesting that the movie opened on August 3, 1947 – the middle of summer and not in the holiday season which surprised me. Also, did you know that the film won three Academy Awards – Best Supporting Actor Edward Gwynn as Kris Kringle, Best Original Screenplay George Seaton, and Best Original Story Valentine Davies who is a UM Alumnus.
Before the show they had an organist playing Christmas songs. At 1:30p, there were a few announcements including getting to meet a representative from Domino Farms Office Complex, the show’s sponsor, before the show began. I really enjoyed the movie although my daughter wasn’t so sure about the black and white. Evidently I had forgotten to warn her that the movie was in black and white. She said she liked it, but she asked when it was going to be over several times and was antsy. She’d been up late for a few nights, so I think she was tired making her antsy.
