This summer the Detroit Zoo again has Dinosauria which started on Memorial Day and continues through Labor Day.
We visited earlier this month, our first visit to the Detroit Zoo with a friend. As Toledo Zoo members, we received half price admission. Dinosauria is an additional admission charge ($4/person, children under 2 are free). There is also a Dinosaur Island Wild Action ride (an additional $4/person).
We had a great time at the zoo. The kids are both dinosaur obsessed and loved Dinosauria. They were so excited they ran from dinosaur to dinosaur barely stopping to look at one before moving on to the next. The dinosaur trail is nearly 1/2 mile long and is designed to be in one direction, so we did not backtrack. At the end of the trail were a number of activities for the kids. There are fossil digs for the kids (rubber mulch) both in the ground, raised beds, and in sand tables. There were also dinosaur rubbings and a giant puzzle. There was a volunteer there who was quite knowledgable about dinosaurs and my husband and our neighbor enjoyed talking to him while the kids played.
My 5.5 year old loved the Wild Action ride and was pretty insistent on riding it. Her friend was skeptical, but decided to do it. He did not like the ride that much. Part of that may be the shrieking group of kids in the front row of our ride.
It was fairly hot the day we were there, so many of the animals were laying in the shade or sleeping. I felt like the zoo was quite long and narrow and it was quite a walk from the car/main entrance to where there were animals. It was definitely a fun trip and would probably return. Toledo is a little more convenient for me, so I will probably retain my membership there.
