8 Adventures Before School Starts

Water Adventures

Labor Day marks the end of the summer swim season. Check out some of these water activities while you still can.

Jump Island

The last two years we have visited Jump Island towards the end of summer.

If you want to visit Jump Island, be sure to visit Groupon to buy your pass for the best savings. Last time we visited, even though there were only 5 of us, the most affordable way to visit was to buy a 6 person Groupon.

Rolling Hills

Rolling Hills is a great water park for a special day out. We visited over the weekend and my daughter had a great time. Their new splash ground is fun even for the older kids.

Kayaking or Tubing – Not Tuesday!!

Update: About an hour after publication, I saw that the Argo & Gallup liveries are closed Tuesday. A sanitary sewer backed up and flowed into Allen Creek. On Wednesday, Still Water Paddling is available at Gallup and Argo. You can also tube the Cascades. River Trips are not running today.

One of our favorite summer activities is heading out on the Huron River. My daughter’s choice is usually kayaking. We have done both the Still-Water Paddle at Gallup and the River Trip from Argo to Gallup. She prefers the River Trip.

We love tubing the Cascades. We have our own tubes, so it is now a free day out for us.

Other Outdoor Adventures

Canopy Walk at Whiting Forest

Whiting Forest in Midland opened the longest canopy walk in the US last fall. Their nature playground is also a lot of fun for kids. Both times, I wish we had taken more time to explore Dow Gardens as well. I suggest packing lunch as their cafe options vary.

Tree Runner Ropes Course

My daughter loves the ropes course in West Bloomfield. After her first visit, she declared it was “The Best Day of My Whole Life”. It is a pricey adventure, but she has loved it every time.

Toledo Zoo

This is a great week to visit the Toledo Zoo. Most Ohio schools are back in session so it is less crowded. We visited this week a couple of years ago and it was a great visit.

More recently, my daughter and I enjoyed their Adventure Course.

Indoor Adventures

The forecast for today was rainy so I wanted to include some indoor adventures.

Henry Ford Museum – Star Trek Exhibit

The Henry Ford Museum is always one of our favorites. This summer their special exhibit is Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds. The exhibit runs through Sunday, September 2 so it is your last chance to visit.

Jiffy Factory Tour

My daughter has loved the Jiffy Factory Tour both times she has attended. It is only open weekdays until 2p, so it is hard to visit during the school year.

Other Suggestions?

Of course there are tons more options for a last adventure before school starts.

With most of Ohio back in school, you could try Cedar Point, or head West to Michigan Adventure.

Stay closer to home and explore the museums like Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, Yankee Air Museum, and the UM Museums. Just be warned of student move-in happening downtown this week.

Explore Detroit with stops at the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center, Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan Science Center, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and much more.
