Zoey + Joey has closed both their original Washtenaw Ave location profiled here and the Washtenaw Ave location they opened later.
Zoey + Joey is an advertiser on Ann Arbor with Kids. I purchased the certificate for my visit at a silent auction. All opinions are 100% mine.
On Friday night, my daughter and I made our second visit to Zoey + Joey hair studio. We had previously visited for my daughter’s haircut in December. On that visit, I remember my daughter being disappointed that she (age 7) was too big for the cool car chairs that are available for toddlers. She did however enjoy being able to watch Tom & Jerry while getting her hair cut.
She has been asking to go back for awhile, but our schedule has been so busy that a hair cut was never a priority. Then, a few weeks ago we were at a Silent Auction for Girl Scouts and one of the items to bid on was a certificate for a girls haircut and mini-manicure at Zoey + Joey. My daughter really wanted to win so she could get her nails done with her haircut.
We originally wanted to use the certificate on May 22 figuring that it was a perfect day since her class was having their music concert that night. When I tried to book the appointments the night before, I could not book an appointment for both services and have time for dinner before the concert, so we decided to wait. Her music concert ended up being postponed, so it worked out just as well.
We ended up selecting Friday after school before seeing The Little Mermaid by Young People’s Theater. My daughter was thrilled to have her fancy hair and nails for the show.
Appointment Process
I love that you can book your appointments online so I can do it at midnight or 7a and not have to worry about if the salon is open. If you prefer, you can also book an appointment by phone. My only suggestion for the online booking is to allow the booking of a haircut and a manicure combination package as a single appointment instead of two separate appointments.
Salon Appearance
The salon is bright with lots of white and green. In the waiting area, there is a slide which my daughter loved checking out before her appointment. Last time I remember having a hard time convincing her to leave. They also offer several car chairs for toddlers and small preschoolers. While the decor and some of the amenities appeal to young children, the decor is not “kiddie” so it will still appeal to tweens and teens, especially girls.
HaircutMy daughter’s haircut started with washing her hair and then talking about how much she wanted taken off. She wanted it significantly shorter and agreed to no bangs so we don’t have the constant upkeep and no layers so it can still be pulled up.
During the hair cut, they have a television that the kids can select a program to watch. My daughter selected Scooby Doo. The selection will depend on what is on television at the current time (they have PBS, Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon Network, and more to select from – it is actually the same Directv package that we have at home). There is also a selection of PlayStation 3 games for the kids to select from.
The stylist that we had this time did a great job with my daughter’s hair. After cutting about 4″ off, she blew dry my daughter’s hair and then gave her a fun style. Rather than pulling all of her hair back like we typically do (we’re big fans of a triple pony tail), she gave her one small braid to hold her hair back. My daughter’s part is to the side, so on the larger side, she did an inverted French braid with the front few inches. We love my daughter’s new haircut. Between the shorter hair and wearing it down, she looks more mature.
I am still trying to perfect the braid. The first time I tried, I was having trouble inverting it, so I switched to a regular French braid. Then, I used way too much hair and had to pull it out. Yesterday I still did a regular French braid, but didn’t make it big enough and her hair was constantly in her face. Today, is the best I’ve gotten it so far. I was able to invert it and have almost the right amount of hair involved.
The one downside to her haircut, is that it is taking longer to fix it in the morning since we are doing fancier hairstyles.
After her haircut, we moved on to the manicure station. We had the same stylist booked for both appointments. I would definitely do that again since it gives the stylist a block of time. On the wall were a series of nail polishes for the girls to pick from. My daughter selected a bright pink. The manicure started with filing her nails. I had recently trimmed them, so they were in pretty good shape. Then, she rubbed scented lotion on my daughter’s hands and arms. My daughter loves smelling things and lotion, so she loved this part. Then she cleaned the lotion off of the nails and painted them with a base coat, two coats, and a top coat. She also gave her a design on her ring finger of each hand. My daughter loved getting the manicure and was willing to sit and hold her hands still while the polish dried. She can’t wait to get another.
The polish has lasted fairly well, except where I have seen her picking at the polish. I wish I had purchased a bottle of the polish for touch-ups at home. My daughter can’t wait for her next manicure. I don’t know that I will do a manicure every time that we get a haircut, but we definitely will book it for some “special occasions” or an afternoon out with a friend.
Prices:
Previously I was taking my daughter to the same salon and stylist that my husband and I went to. However, she had just retired after having her second child so we were left looking for new stylists. The price of a girls haircut at Zoey + Joey is comparable to what I was paying at the previous salon and is more fun for my daughter. Boys haircuts are $21 and girls are $23. A mini-manicure is $9. You can combine a mini-manicure and girls haircut for $30. They also do adult cuts for $25 which is great to get the whole family done at one shot (if only I didn’t need my hair colored too). For babies, they offer a first-haircut package for $15 which includes a lock of hair and a certificate.
They offer discounted bundle packages for 4 haircuts (4 boys cuts, 4 girls cuts, or 2 of each). They are currently offering a 25% discount on hair cuts Mondays and Wednesdays before 3p (great for preschoolers), and Teen Thursday with 50% off haircuts for teens (11-18) after school on Thursday.
Boutique:
In addition to their hair and nail services, they offer many of the products that they use for sale as well as other hair accessories. While the products are available, I was definitely not pressured to buy them. They also had a few snacks available for purchase. I did receive pressure to buy the snacks – from my daughter. I had brought her a snack for the car between school and her appointment and we were headed to dinner after our appointment, so I had to turn her down. However, if I had forgotten it would have been very handy to be able to purchase something (I recall seeing squeeze applesauce and maybe fruit snacks).
I definitely recommend Zoey + Joey for your child’s haircut or manicure. I would also like to thank Zoey + Joey for their donation to the Girl Scout’s silent auction where I purchased the certificate I used. It was a very active bidding item.
