Child Passenger Safety Week – Car Seat Inspections

This week is National Child Passenger Safety Week. Have you ever verified the installation of your child’s car seat? Or that it is the proper seat for your child/vehicle and is installed properly?

I definitely recommend getting your carseat inspected. Many car seats are not installed properly. I know my husband and I did an awful job of installing our daughter’s original seat. I had heard about Safe Kids and was able to use them to find an inspector at C.S. Mott. Fortunately, my husband wanted to take advantage of the slow week between Christmas and New Years at the University and we had the seat properly fit a month before her due date. It was a good move since my daughter was born a week later – 25 days early. When she transitioned from an infant carrier to a convertible seat we returned to the seat inspectors and did not need any alterations – we sure learned a lot from our first session.

The following events sponsored by Huron Valley Safe Kids are scheduled for our area:

  • Wednesday, September 18 noon-3p – at Ypsilanti Township Fire Department
  • Sunday, September 21 10a-2p at Suburban Chevrolet Ann Arbor

There are many more inspectors available now than when my daughter was born – 7.5 years ago. At the time I had a hard time finding an inspector who was still doing car seat fittings and they only did them on certain schedules. There are also licensed inspectors who work for Elephant Ears and The Little Seedling as well as local fire departments.
