Best Places to Ice Skate in Ann Arbor

Spread the love

There are several Ann Arbor Ice Skating Rinks available including both indoor and outdoor options in winter.

The local ice rinks were closed to public skating for much of the 2020-2021 winter due to the pandemic, but they are open again for 2021-2022 with some restrictions.

As a child my favorite part of winter was ice skating. When I lived in Illinois, our neighborhood park offered outdoor ice skating (basically it was a gully that was flooded each winter). My school bus took me by the park on the way home so I could check for ice conditions. However, with two younger siblings my mom had to bundle up and bring with us, I probably didn’t get to go as often as I would have liked.

Regrettably, my daughter did not inherit my joy of skating and after years, my skating skills are not what they were. She gamely tried skating at a birthday party as a kindergartener, but did not want to try again until a couple of years ago. Last year at 14, she gamely took lessons at Vets accompanied by much younger children. Sadly, she missed the last class due to the pandemic and a couple of earlier classes due to illness and other commitments. Hopefully she has retained some of her lessons.

Outdoor Skating in Parks

In 2016 Ann Arbor added 3 natural outdoor rinks that are available when the weather is cold enough. They are typically setup later in the winter and are dependent on weather conditions.

In 2016, Ann Arbor Parks added 3 natural outdoor temporary skating rinks. They were at Allmendinger, Burns Park, and Northside. These rinks were dependent on weather conditions. As of November 2021, there is no longer a mention of them on the Ann Arbor Parks website. We will add them if they get announced again. They have not operated since 2018-2019. The winter of 2019-2020 did not get cold enough for them to be setup. They were not setup in 2020-2021 due to the pandemic.
