There are several Ice Skating Rinks Near Ann Arbor. These include both indoor ice rinks available year round or seasonally, and outdoor rinks. As a child, my bus route home from school went past a park where they created a natural rink each winter. I would check the status to see if it was safe to skate and then beg my mom to take me (this meant bundling up my two younger siblings so I didn’t get to go as often as I would have liked.
Regrettably, my daughter did not inherit my joy of skating and after years, my skating skills are not what they once were. She tried skating at a birthday party as a kindergartener. That experience only convinced her not to skate for a few years.
In 2020 at 14, she gamely took beginner lessons at Vets accompanied by much younger children. Sadly, she did not get very many lessons – due to illness, other commitments, and the pandemic. But, she has been skating a few times since and has retained some of her lessons.

Ann Arbor Ice Rinks
All of the ice skating rinks in Ann Arbor offer skate rental or allow you to bring your own skates. There are also pro shops at several of the rinks.
Early Closure Alert
Veterans Ice Arena has closed for the season in February 2026 due to a broken compressor. They have added extra daytime skating hours to Buhr Park Ice Arena. As of March 23, Buhr Park is now closed for the 2025-2026 season
Yost Ice Arena
Yost Ice Arena is University of Michigan’s ice arena. It is home to their hockey team.
Yost Ice Arena has public skate several times a week. The schedule does vary based on the UM academic calendar and the hockey game schedule.
They open for the 2026 season on October 1. No end date is announced. We have tentatively set it for the end of April, but that is subject to change.

Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena
Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena is a permanent outdoor ice rink. While outdoors, the rink is covered, has refrigeration to operate at outdoor temperatures a little over 50 degrees, and has facilities such as skate rental, regular maintenance, and restrooms.
The Outdoor Ice Arena is located adjacent to the swimming pool and uses the same front counter and locker room
With Veterans Park Ice Arena closing early in the 2025-2026 season due to compressor issues, they have added additional skate times at Buhr Park.
Update: On March 23 they announced that Buhr Park ice rink is closed for the season.

Biggby Coffee Ice Cube Ann Arbor is a private Ice Arena with multiple ice rinks and is home to many local hockey teams and the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club.

Arctic Coliseum
Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea has two indoor rinks. They offer a variety of drop-in sessions.
Open Skate is available for all ages.
On select Saturday nights they offer a DJ Skate with laser lights, video wall, and songs requests from the DJ.

Veterans Park Ice Arena
Closed Early for Season
2026 Update: Closed February 18 for the season due to a compressor failure. They had been scheduled to be open through April
Veterans Park Ice Arena is the Park System’s indoor ice rink. It is located at Veterans Memorial Park, 2150 Jackson Ave. The ice arena operates seasonally from October until April.
They offer Open Skate regularly and typically add extra days and times on days that AAPS is scheduled to be closed.

Outdoor Ice Rink at Dexter’s Monument Park
Dexter has an outdoor ice skating rink at Monument Park. The availability of this outdoor ice skating rink near Ann Arbor is very dependent on the weather. It requires several days below freezing for the initial freeze. Even once it opens, its availability can vary by day.
They announced the rink was open on January 23, 2026. Their Facebook page seems to be the best source for information on the rink. I didn’t find updates on their website.
Outdoor Ice Skating – Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation
In addition to the covered, permanent outdoor Buhr Park Ice Arena, Ann Arbor added 3 natural outdoor rinks starting in 2016. They were available when the weather was cold enough. They are typically setup later in the winter and are dependent on weather conditions. Sadly, they have not been set up since 2019.
The winter of 2019-2020 did not get cold enough for them to be setup. Then the pandemic disrupted the addition outdoor rinks. As of November 2021, they are no longer mentioned on the city’s website.
