Olga’s Kitchen – Review
A couple of weeks ago I attended a tasting event at the new Olga’s Kitchen in Ann Arbor to share information with my readers. My daughter loves Olga’s and was jealous that she was not invited with me. So, we returned the following weekend while running errands for a family lunch.
New Ann Arbor Olga’s Kitchen Location
There are three Olga’s Kitchen locations in Ann Arbor. The newest location opened in early November at 3500 Washtenaw Avenue next door to Dollar Tree, across the street from Arborland Shopping Center. This is one of the first restaurants in their new modern concept with an open kitchen.
Other Olga’s Kitchen locations in Ann Arbor are Briarwood Mall and at 3399 Plymouth Rd in Plymouth Green Shopping Center.
About Olga’s Kitchen
Olga’s Kitchen is a metro-Detroit institution. Olga Loizon started the restaurant in 1970 in Birmingham. Team Schostak, a fourth-generation Metro Detroit company bought Olga’s Kitchen in late 2015. Since taking over, they have returned to the original recipes that made Olga’s Kitchen a local tradition. This includes bringing Olga back to the kitchen to review their recipes and processes.
Food at Olga’s Kitchen
The food at Olga’s Kitchen is centered on their signature Olga’s Bread and Mediterranean flavors. From Snackers to Olga’s signature sandwiches to desserts, their wonderful bread makes the meal.
Hands Down, my favorite dish at Olga’s Kitchen has always been their Snackers which are available as a Starter. Snackers are wedges of Olga’s bread that have been fried and dusted with seasoning. They are served with Swiss Almond Cheese Spread which is delicious (just be wary if you have a nut allergy in your family).
We sampled three other Starters: Zucchini Fries, Spinach & Feta Dip with Garden-Herb Seasoned Snackers, and Three Cheese Bites (not pictured). The Zucchini Fries were delicious and an alternative to their traditional curly fries. While I enjoyed the Spinach & Feta Dip, it couldn’t live up to the Traditional Snackers for me.
I’ve tried a number of Olga’s Sandwiches over the years. Sandwiches are served a la carte with the option to add side dishes. With the menu revamp, they have added Olga’s Perfect Pair Meal which pairs any half-sized Olga Sandwich with your choice of two sides. At our tasting event, I started a trend by ordering a Perfect Pair Meal. When I returned with my family, we all also ordered a Perfect Pair Meal.
I paired Peasant Soup, Olga’s Salad, and an Original Olga at the tasting event which was the most common combination at our event. The Peasant Soup is my favorite soup pairing a tomato based broth with beef, lamb, and vegetables. Of course it is served with a side of Snackers. The Olga’s Salad is also delicious.
For my half-sized Olga Sandwich, I selected The Original Olga. It was the first time I’ve tried the Original and I did enjoy it. I was shocked at the size of the half-sized sandwich. With the starters that we shared, I was only able to eat half of it. I verified that it is really only a half.
When dining with my family, we all chose a Perfect Pair Meal. My husband opted for Peasant Soup and Olga’s Seasoned Curly Fries with a Steak & Cheese Olga. Our daughter chose a Caesar Salad and Olga’s Seasoned Curly Fries with a Smoked Pork Olga. Again, I had the Peasant Soup and Olga’s Salad. However, this time I paired it with a Sesame Chicken Olga. With less starters this time, my husband and I both finished our meals. My daughter brought home half of her sandwich.
The Kids Menu offers a number of great options for kids. In past years, my daughter has ordered their Macaroni and Cheese or Three Cheese Olga. They also make a PB&J. The Kids Meals include a choice of side including fries, apples, carrots, or orange slices. They also include a drink.
Beverages and Desserts
At our tasting event, we all splurged on an Orange Cream Cooler to drink. The Cooler is delicious, but very thick. They also offer Pepsi Products to drink.
For dessert, we each had a Pumpkin Spice Bread Pudding. The bread pudding is a seasonal item during the holiday season. It is made with real pumpkin and served warm. Honestly, I expected a bit more pumpkin flavor. I also prefer a moister bread pudding. Previously, I’ve enjoyed their Cinnamon Sugar Snacker dessert. I definitely prefer the Snacker dessert over the bread pudding. They also offer a brownie: Birmingham’s Best Brownie served with ice cream and chocolate sauce.
