Lights Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo

Today, we finally made it to the Toledo Zoo for Lights Before Christmas. I say finally even though it was only the third night in 2009, because we have been meaning to go for a few years and never made it. We decided to take advantage of the relatively mild weather this weekend and headed down tonight.

The zoo was beautifully decorated with trees in both solid and multi-colors. They also had light sculptures of animals. In the cheetah valley, they have a light show of changing colors and flashing set to holiday songs. You can also meet Santa in the Museum of Science. My daughter is not a big fan of meeting Santa Claus (though she loves the presents he brings), so we skipped this step. Nature’s Neighborhood was open, however to my daughter’s disappointment, the play area was closed. Inside the home, they had a table setup for the kids to make pine cone bird-feeders (be warned they use peanut butter to hold the seeds on in case your child has allergies).

We saw very few animals on our trip. Many of the animals were indoors. However, the wolves were extremely active – many people were commenting on them.

There were lots of stands selling hot chocolate and other snacks including pretzels. We can recommend the cinnamon pretzel.

The train is running during the event, with discounted tickets for $1/person instead of the normal $2/person rate. The animals were mostly inside, but there were some lights and we did see a zebra poking his head out of his stall on our ride.
