Egg Scramble Review A2 Jaycees

I found a golden egg…
does it unlock an Angry Birds level

Last weekend we attended the Ann Arbor Jaycees Egg Scramble and Springfest. The 2012 event was held at Southeast Park (the northwest corner of Platt & Ellsworth). We had previously attended the 2010 event at Veterans Memorial Park. We were unable to attend the 2011 event at Buhr Park.

Egg Face Painting

There are several things that I think the Jaycees event does right.

  • They rotate it among parks so it is in different parts of Ann Arbor.
  • They exchange empty eggs for a prize
  • They do multiple scrambles
  • They have other activities going on
The event has been at Veterans Park in 2010, Buhr Park in 2011, and Southeast Park in 2012. I don’t know where the 2013 event will be.

With all of the press this year about locations canceling their egg hunts due to fights that have broken out…among the parents. It is nice not that they do an exchange…your empty eggs for a bag of candy, so that everyone receives the same prize whether they got one egg or 10 eggs. We have had issues with the parents in past years at the Pittsfield Township egg hunt and my daughter has had a hard time finding eggs. We have not had any issues like this at the Jaycees event.

The Jaycees event is far more than just an egg scramble. They had face painting, a picture opportunity with the Easter Bunny, and games. My daughter had a great time. She loved playing the games and winning prize stickers.
There were a few things about the event that did not go as smoothly as planned.
  • Parking
  • Bunny Pictures Lines
  • Schedule
The parking was extremely limited. We ended up parking at Swift Run Dog Park on Platt Rd and walking from there. There were quite a few cars parked on Ellsworth Rd. We may have tried to park there if we had come from a different direction. I feel like the lot was bigger at Veterans Park – or maybe we just arrived early enough. But, the limited parking was not enough to keep us from attending in future years.
When we arrived, my husband stood in line for face painting, I waited to meet the Easter Bunny, and my dad took my daughter to the playground. There were two lines at the Easter Bunny, one to sign up to have your picture emailed to you and one to just meet the bunny. I had a camera so I decided to just do the one line to meet the bunny. I wish there had just been one line to meet the bunny and a clipboard to pass to sign up for the email if you wanted it. While I was there, they did seem to be trying to reorganize so that the line went through the signup table instead of two separate lines. Our timing worked perfectly, my daughter saw the bunny with me and then we met my husband in the face painting line where he was 2nd in line. She was then able to play a game before heading to the egg scramble area.
Scrambling for eggs
When we arrived there was a sign with the schedule of events. They listed 4 scramble times, one of which was earlier and one of which had just passed. The remaining times were at 12:15 and 12:45. We lined up at 12:12p and waited and waited. At that point there were no eggs on the course and the DJ was still playing music. They finally ran the last egg scramble about 12:35p and announced that it was the last one. I guess they decided to combine the egg scrambles. I am just glad I was not waiting for the 12:45p scramble. I wish they had announced the correct times so we would not have stood at the start line for 20 minutes.

Overall, we had a great time at the Ann Arbor Jaycees Egg Scramble and Spring fest. We will plan to attend again in the future.
