The Halloween Party at University of Michigan Museum of Natural History is one of our favorite Ann Arbor Halloween events. While the museum is still closed, they are holding a costume contest and Halloween at Home fun.
About the UM Museum of Natural History Halloween Party
The UMMNH Halloween Party was typically held on the Sunday afternoon before Halloween. It was always packed with activities spread across the galleries. The exact activities varied year to year, but there were often crafts, live animals, stories spooky experiences. As a parent one thing that always stood out to me was the effort that many of the student docents put into their costumes.
The last party was held in 2017 since the museum closed in 2018 as they moved to the new building. Last year (2019) they were still working on the second phase of reopening. We were hoping it would return this year…of course 2020 had other ideas with the museum still closed to the public due to COVID-19.
But, that isn’t stopping the UMMNH this year. They are hosting both Halloween@Home with Science Fun and a Costume Contest on Halloween.
Halloween@Home
In Halloween@Home, UMMNH will host a FREE spooky science webinar. There will be spooky science demos and a chance to vote in their Frightening Fun Costume Contest
Advance registration is needed for Halloween@Home. Registration is FREE, but donations are encouraged to support the museum.
Frightening Fun Costume Contest
UMMNH is holding a costume contest this year with lots of fun categories. To enter, you need to upload photos of your costume by 5p on October 30. 30 of the best costumes will be featured in a slide show during Halloween@Home for a chance to win the People’s Choice category.
Costumes will be awarded in the following categories:
- Best Prehistoric Creature
- Best Scientist
- Best Scientific Concept
- Best Group Costume
- People’s Choice (determined by votes during Halloween@Home).
Costumes will be evaluated based on creativity and execution. Prizes will be delivered to local winners by a costumed T-Rex.
