A couple of weeks ago we went to Science Day at the Toledo Zoo. The event was held in Nature’s Neighborhood and we had a great time. My daughter has been very into science experiments this summer so this was a great match for her
The first set of experiments we went to were Kitchen Chemistry. This included many of the experiments we have already done at home. Milk fireworks (which doesn’t work that well in my opinion), vinegar and baking soda volcanoes, and more. The presentation at this session was not that interesting to the kids.
However, our next session was the Dry Ice Show. Since my husband does dry ice fog every halloween, she was quite interested. The presenter (Solar Steve) was very engaging to the kids and kept them entertained. She had a blast watching this show – until he blew dry ice showers (just a cloud of cold carbon dioxide gas) onto the kids.

In addition to the dry ice show, Solar Steve also did an Air and Flight Show. My only complaint is my daughter has been into potty humor and this show only exacerbated the problem – Toilet Plunger Tug of War and Flying Toilet Paper. However, she loved watching the show and at the end was able to participate in her own game of Toilet Paper Plunger Tug of War. She also asked Solar Steve if he could do the Flying Toilet Paper again, and she got to help by holding the plunger with the roll on it.
She also got to make a paper helicopter and launch it from the play structure. Her only problem was the first time she launched her helicopter it landed on the top of a rock wall. They also had bubble tubs which she had a ton of fun with. She also got to paint and mix paint colors.
We did stop to see Lucas, the new baby elephant before leaving. We also made a visit to the polar bears. We did not see other animals since we had been to the Detroit Zoo to see Dinosauria the previous day and were ready to get home.
We had a blast at science day. I hope they have Science Day again next summer. I will be sure to mark my calendar before it comes out.
