Ann Arbor Face Masks

Where to Find Face Masks in Ann Arbor

We’ve rounded up the best options for Ann Arbor Face Masks – both local stores selling them and masks by local makers. Today Governor Whitmer strengthened the face mask requirement. They are now required in indoor locations and crowded outdoor locations.

New Mask Order

Masks are now required in all indoor locations and crowded outdoor locations. Businesses are required to refuse service to those not wearing masks.

No shirts, no shoes, no mask—no service.
Governor Whitmer – Executive Order 2020-147

Children under 5 are exempt from the order, although masks are encouraged on children 2 and older. There are a few exceptions where a mask is not practical (ie at the dentist, while eating inside a food service, etc), when communicating with someone who needs to read lips.

Note, child care centers and camps are not considered public places and are not subject to the requirement.

Individuals not wearing masks can be charged with a misdemeanor and fine of up to $500. The individual mask order goes into affect immediately.

Businesses must enforce wearing of a mask according to the order. They can lose their business license if serving customers who are not masked. The business mask order goes into affect at 12:01a on Monday, July 13.

Masks are also available at many national chains as well. Readers have recommended Target and Meijer. I saw them online at Old Navy. If you are looking for disposable masks, suggestions included hardware stores, Staples, drug stores, and Aldi.

Online Mask Resources

We started with neck gaiter style masks. These are great for a quick encounter when walking in the park or for curbside pickups. We can wear them around our neck or as a headband and quickly pull over our mouth or nose when we encounter someone. For me, they don’t stay in place while talking or for extended time.

Next, we bought a pack of ear loop masks on Amazon. These were affordable and got us started with a better mask. These masks had quick delivery – and allowed us to get a mask without needing a mask.

While basic black, we have been very happy with these masks. The nose bridge has a metal strip to aid in fit. We have run them through the washing machine several times.

As a pack of 3 they were perfect for our family of 3. They fit all 3 of us…my 14 year old daughter, my husband, and myself.

While I like the ear loop masks, I want to try some that tie around the head or with elastic that goes around the head. These will be easier to take off and put on quickly than the ear loop masks.

My husband and daughter are happy with basic black or solid color prints. But if you want a “fun” mask, Etsy is a great source. I did convince my daughter to try these galaxy print masks with ear loops. I was able to retie the elastic straps to be around the head to convert them. The galaxy print is out of stock, but the shop has other masks available.
