My daughter and I attended the First Annual Star Wars Reads Day at the Downtown Branch of the Ann Arbor District Library on Saturday, October 6.

| Her Creation of R2-D2’s Girlfriend |
We arrived about 2p and headed for the crafts in the Youth Story Corner. They had materials setup for kids to create their own droid. Materials included toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, ribbons, pipe cleaners, bottle caps, and more. My daughter decided to base her creation on R2-D2 and started with a toilet paper roll and covered it in purple ribbon. Somewhere along the line, she decided her droid should be R2-D2s girlfriend.
They also had several worksheets in the Youth Story Corner. These worksheets included mazes, a crossword puzzle, a Yoda bookmark, and more. You can print your own copies of these activities from the Color & B&W PDFs on the Star Wars Reads site.
In the lobby, they had a photo booth. When we arrived there were stormtroopers and other characters present to have your picture taken with. My daughter was anxious to get to the crafts, so we did not stop for pictures when we arrived. After finishing in the Youth Story Corner we had her picture taken. By that time, the characters had left for the day.

| Star Wars Paper Crafts |
We then headed downstairs to the multi-purpose room for the paper crafting that was designed for older kids. The Darth Vader paper craft was the simplest of the paper crafts so we assembled that one first. The C-3PO and Yoda are based on the LEGO figures and have five pieces each – head, body, legs, right arm, and left arm. Each piece needed to be cut and trimmed separately and then folded and assembled. After cutting and assembling C-3PO, I decided to be “nice” and save Yoda for my husband to do with our daughter since he was out of town for the event.
As we assembled our paper crafts, the Star Wars costume contest was conducted. Congratulations to the winners! We did not have a chance to attend the trivia session. My daughter has not seen all of the movies yet, so the trivia contest probably would have been too hard for her.
I am glad that we were able to attend and we had fun. I hope they do make this an annual event and we will try to attend next year. The only downside was that the event was held at the Downtown Library. Since we were there for 2.5 hours, the event cost us $4.20 in parking.
