Guest Post: Super Bowl in Canton with Special Needs

Last month I was approached by Alice, a mother of four with three special needs children, about contributing to Ann Arbor with Kids focusing on topics of interest to special needs families. I will periodically be sharing her thoughts with you. Her first guest post is below.

My name is Alice. I am a wife and mother of four. Three of my children are on the autism spectrum.

I have been invited to guest blog on Ann Arbor with Kids. I will be contributing a series of blogs featuring special needs friendly activities and businesses in the Ann Arbor area. I will also be working with local businesses to help them be more welcoming and accommodating to special needs families.
I look forward to sharing this journey with you.

The first business my family visited is Super Bowl in Canton MI. We went with another family who also has a child on the autism spectrum.
They host a family fun night every Friday from 6PM-8PM. Here is an excerpt from their website about the family fun night –

“Take the family or friends out for some fun this week in a Smoke Free environment! Enjoy our Live DJ playing your favorite songs! Rental shoes just $.99! Bumpers available. Maximum 6 per lane. Advance reservations accepted with payment.
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM ~ Fridays
All You Can Bowl for $19.95 per lane.”

Super Bowl was extremely welcoming to our special needs family. We called ahead to ask for a bowling ramp for my son who has some motor planning issues. They also had the bumpers set up and everything ready to go when we arrived, which saved us a difficult wait in line at the front desk.
If your child has sensory issues with lights or music this may not be the best event for them. The fun night features glow bowl, which could be a bit of a sensory overload for some kids due to the flashing lights and overhead music. My kids enjoyed the lights and music, but have less sensory processing difficulties than some special needs children.
Super Bowl offers traditional bowling as an alternative at a family friendly price. Please visit their website (available at the bottom of this page) for more information about open bowling hours.
We will definitely visit this venue again as a family. We felt very welcome and all our kids had a lot of fun!
