Washtenaw County Health Department offers free hearing & vision screenings for children under age 21 or to special education students up to age 26.
You can call 734-544-6786 to schedule a free screening offered from May to August 2025. I recommend calling early to beat the rush in August.
Throughout the year, they also conduct screenings at schools based on referrals from teachers, parents, nurses, and physicians. I know a school screening caught when my daughter needed glasses in spring of her Kindergarten year.

Other Screening Options
Many doctors will conduct a hearing and vision screening at regular well child checkups particularly in years that physicals are required for school.
Required Hearing & Vision Screenings
Hearing & vision screenings are required for Michigan students starting kindergarten or preschool as well as:
- Preschoolers
- Students in kindergarten
- Students in first grade
- Students new to Michigan
- Special education students
Vision screenings are also required for grades 3, 5, 7 & 9. Hearing screenings are required for students in 2 & 4th grade.
