Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week is next week – October 9-15. With Fire Prevention Week, a number of local fire stations will have open houses. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait Check the Date.” Everyone knows to replace batteries in their smoke detectors, but did you know that the smoke detectors themselves need to be replaced?

Smoke Detectors

I am so happy that smoke detector expiration is the focus of this year’s Fire Prevention Week. Until a few years ago, I had no idea that smoke detectors expired. After that replacing ours was on the back burner. Then, we experienced failure of our smoke detectors after two cooking incidents. Ours were 11 years old at the time and did not alarm when the house filled with smoke due to a cooking incident. Fortunately, there was no fire. We replaced our detectors in 2014.

Fire Department Open Houses

Fire Department Open Houses are a traditional part of Fire Prevention Week. Ann Arbor Fire Department will have all of their stations open each day from Monday-Saturday. Note that the open house may end during an emergency call. Pittsfield Township will also have an open house at their station on Michigan Avenue.

If you know of any other Fire Department Open Houses, add them in the comments and I will add them to the calendar listing below.
