Plan 2 Ways Out

Does your family have an escape plan? Does your child know how to get out of the house alone? The infographic below gives you some information on planning your escape routes.

Smoke Detectors

After personal experiences, I am reiterating last year’s emphasis on replacing your smoke detectors and batteries. We have had old smoke detectors fail to work (fortunately for a contained cooking incident). And this year, we had alarms sound during a power outage due to low batteries. Even though they were on battery backup and had not started chirping, the low battery caused a false alarm to sound.

Originally, I had no idea that smoke detectors expired. I knew ours were past the date, but the replacement was on the back burner. Then, we experienced failure of our smoke detectors after two cooking incidents. Ours were 11 years old at the time and did not alarm when the house filled with smoke due to a cooking incident. Fortunately, there was no fire. We replaced our detectors in 2014.

Fire Department Open Houses

Fire Department Open Houses are a traditional part of Fire Prevention Week. Ann Arbor Fire Department will have all of their stations open each day from Monday-Saturday. Note that the open house may end during an emergency call. Pittsfield Township will also have an open house at their station on Michigan Avenue.

If you know of any other Fire Department Open Houses, add them in the comments and I will add them to the calendar listing below.
