The 5 Best Ann Arbor Family Photo Locations
Today’s Ask an Expert on the 5 Best Ann Arbor Family Photo Locations is sponsored by Brittany Bennion Photography.
Family photos – Some people love them and some people don’t. But getting them done is one of the most important things you can do! However, they can be quite a big task…from outfits and hair, to choosing a photographer or finding a day where Michigan’s unpredictable weather is just right. And what about location?
Luckily for you, Ann Arbor is one of the most beautiful places anywhere! With plenty of green space and easy to access locations, this is one aspect of your session where you won’t have to worry.
Top 5 Ann Arbor Family Photo Locations
1 – Nichols Arboretum / Matthaei Botanical Gardens
1610 Washington Heights / 1800 N. Dixboro Road
The Arb and Botanical Gardens are my #1 requested locations for good reason. These quintessential locations reflect all the best things about Ann Arbor. Gorgeous greenery, delicate flowers, manicured walking paths, the Huron River, and unique architecture. You can’t go wrong with these locations. With so much variety, your images will always feel unique.
Don’t forget there is a fee to take professional pictures at both of these locations, ranging from $35-$100 (more if you are doing wedding portraits). You’ll also want to double check their calendar, as some weekends may not be available or you’ll run into a concert or event in the parks.
2 – County Farm Park
2230 Platt Road
County Farm Park is the perfect location for young families. The large parking lot makes it easy to find a close place to park and you don’t need to walk far to access some amazing photo spots. Large fields, flower beds, walking paths, and a rustic fence are all great reasons to check out this location. Even on the busiest of days, there’s always a beautiful side trail to sneak off to for your family photos. The best part is that you can “bribe” your children with a few minutes at their amazing playground after your session. (Editor’s note – Check out our Playground Profile of County Farm Park)
3 – Parker Mill County Park
4650 Geddes Rd.
Parker Mill is a smaller park, but packs a big punch. Flemming Creek runs right through this park, and since it’s smaller you can get right next to the creek for some amazing nature shots. Beautiful bridges also overlook the creek that make for some fun family images. A boardwalk trail and even the mill building and old log cabin are great for unique pictures.

4 – Island Park
1420 Island Dr.
This park was made to be photographed in the fall! The ever changing colored leaves and warm evening sunlight turn Island Park into a wonderland. Spring run-off makes the river high, and the park will get super muddy, so wait until it gets a little drier before venturing to this location. The shallow waters allow you to walk through the Huron River on the west side of the island and the reflection on the water can be magical. There are four amazing bridges that have beautiful vantage points and even a gazebo that is fun to include in your photographs. This also has a nice playground that kids can go to after a session, or to run off some excess energy. (Editor’s note – Check out our Playground Profile of Island Park)
5 – Lillie Park
4365 Platt Road
Lillie Park is a small nature area in south east Ann Arbor. Never very busy, this park may have the occasional fisher or small row boat. But the pond is absolutely beautiful. If you catch it at the right time, it can be an eye-popping turquoise blue, or stunning emerald green. With plenty of foliage, this location is perfect for any season of the year.
*BONUS LOCATION* – Your own backyard!
Ann Arbor is one of the most amazing places you’ll find. You don’t have to travel far at all to get beautiful pictures of your family. You can find a great spot, even in your own backyard! The fact that the location means something to you makes it even more special.
