Update 10/22/2018 – Pieology Ann Arbor has closed along with other Metro Detroit locations
Before downtown Ann Arbor is completely invaded by returning students, my family decided to make our first excursion to Pieology. My daughter dressed for our outing in her “Pizza is Always a Good Idea” shirt from Justice. That definitely sums up her philosophy on pizza. Pieology Ann Arbor is located at 620 East Liberty.
At Pieology, you can select one of their pre-designed pizza or create your own custom pizza from their vast array of sauces, cheeses, meats, veggies, and other toppings. The pizzas are then cooked in their stone oven. Instead of pizza you can also customize a salad.
Pieology offers 7 of their favorite creations that you can order as is, or you can customize your own pizza. Each of us decided to customize our own pizzas. Whether you opt for a Pieology creation or make a custom pizza, they are all priced the same – $7.95 unless you opt for a Gluten-Free crust which has a $2 upgrade fee.
Pielogoy currently offers three crust options – Homemade, Homemade Whole Wheat, or Gluten-Free ($2 upgrade). Note that while they offer a Gluten-Free crust, they do have warnings that it is probably not safe for those with Celiac Disease because of cross-contamination. My daughter and husband had the traditional Homemade while I had the Homemade Whole Wheat. Both crusts were very good.
Pieology has a number of sauce options. My husband and daughter opted for the traditional red while I had a pesto sauce. Other sauce options include BBQ sauce, 3 cheese alfredo, buffalo, olive oil, and herb butter. I loved my pesto pizza and they both enjoyed their traditional sauce. You can also mix the sauces for a more interesting pizza.
Cheese & Meats
There are several varieties of cheese available – Mozzarella, Parmesan, Feta, Gorgonzola, and Ricotta Cheese. I loved being able to mix the cheeses – I went with Mozzarella and Parmesan on my Pesto Pizza. I do wish there was a cheddar or colby jack which would pair well with the barbecue or buffalo sauces.
There are a wide variety of meats available…pepperoni, sausage, chicken, spicy chicken, meatballs, ham, and bacon. Both cheese and meats can be used in any combination. My daughter and I both had chicken on our pizzas while my husband added a variety of meats to his pizza.
Pieology offers an extensive array of vegetable, herbs, and fruit toppings for your pizza. I added red onions, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, fresh basil, and garlic. They also have olives, mushrooms, artichokes, pineapple, cilantro, corn, and many others.
In addition to pizza, Pieology offers salads, bread strips, and cinnamon sugar strips. They also have fountain drinks (Coke products) and a small selection of bottled beverages.
Pieology Service and Taste
We had excellent service at Pieology. When we arrived, the restaurant was fairly empty and we were able to order right away. They walked us each through making our pizza. While my husband was ordering his (the last of our three), I paid for our order and we started getting our drinks. My daughter had ordered his pizza first and it arrived before we finished filling our drinks. My pizza was out shortly after. My husband’s took a couple of extra minutes since it was the last one into the oven.
We all enjoyed our pizzas and enjoyed our combinations. We each ate half of our pizza and brought the other half home for another meal. Their takeout boxes were perfect for pizza leftovers. Instead of a full size pizza box, they were just the right size to hold half of a pizza.
Pieology vs. Neopapalis
Pieology is very similar to Neopapalis which is located at 500 E. William St and is a favorite of ours.
Advantages for Pieology:
- All pizzas are priced the same so you can add as many toppings as you wish
- More options for pizza sauce
- Crust options including Whole Wheat and Gluten-Free
- Serves Coke products
Advantages for Neopapalis:
- Seasonal Ingredients and Monthly Special Pizzas
- Pizzas are slightly larger
- Alcoholic Beverages are available at the bar
- Sandwiches on the Menu
- Local Business
I imagine going forward that we will visit both restaurants. The simpler pricing at Pieology is very attractive although we do like supporting the local business of Neopapalis.
Have you been to Pieology? What did you think?
