Have you heard that Great Lakes Zoological Society is going to be closing? They will be open through February 15.
Here is a copy of the letter that they sent to supporters:
Dear Supporter of the Great Lakes Zoological Society,
With heavy hearts, we regret to inform you that the Great Lakes Zoological Society will be permanently closing its doors in the near future. The zoo is not financially viable, and the volunteers who form the Board of Directors have made the difficult decision to liquidate our assets to pay our creditors.
We are working closely with our dedicated staff and scientific advisors to ensure that our animals are placed in excellent new homes. As much as possible, animals will be re-homed to reputable zoos and nature centers where they will be on exhibit and promote conservation education, and we are working so that all will be placed in carefully vetted new homes that are equipped to keep our beloved animals healthy and safe.
Your past and present contributions, sponsorships, and memberships are supporting this important effort to re-home everyone, from our 20 foot python, Lawan, to the tiniest frogs, and we thank you. We will continue with our usual hours, 10 am to 4 pm every day, until further notice. We definitely will be open through February 15, and we hope you can come out to visit your favorite animal. All items in our gift shop are 30% off, and current zoo members will receive 50% off.
We are talking with nearby, high quality educational nonprofits such as the Leslie Science and Nature Center, the Binder Park Zoo, and the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum about transferring memberships, and current members will receive a separate message by early next week.
While the GLZS is closing, the animals will be loved in safe new homes, and we hope that our four years in Ann Arbor provided you and your family with memories that will last a lifetime.
Sincerely,
GLZS Board of Directors
