My daughter had several friends over for an American Girl Play Day last week. One of our activities was watching an American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars. Part of going to the movies is getting popcorn, so I wanted to create popcorn for the dolls.

My daughter and I wandered the aisles of Michaels for awhile looking for possible materials. We found paper snack cups that were the perfect size to act as popcorn bowls. Now the challenge was to fill them.
In searching my craft closet, I found several yellow foam cylinders of roughly the same diameter as the cups. My daughter had gotten them at The Scrap Box, a local non-profit that collects manufacturing waste and sells it for crafting use. They probably should have been my first stop for craft supplies. I still wasn’t quite sure how to turn this into popcorn though with thoughts to sculpt the top.
Then, my juice box craft wasn’t working as I had hoped. Instead of buying sponges like I had seen online, I had bought a piece of styrofoam. As I was cutting the juice boxes from the foam, it was crumbling unevenly and making a mess of little odd shaped white balls…just like miniature popcorn. Problem solved!
I shaped the bottoms of the cylinders so they were tapered like my cups and crumbled lots of styrofoam. Each girl then got to put her foam in her cup and glue the popcorn on the top.
We used Elmer’s school glue to apply a layer on the top of the foam and sprinkled the foam bits on top. The glue seemed to hold. The yellow foam peeking through gives the popcorn a hint of butter.
