Leslie Science & Nature Center (LSNC) is proud to introduce a new program series, Parents’ Night Out, a great way for parents to have an evening to themselves to use however they see fit.  Parents’ Night Out: Astronomy Adventure is designed for kids aged 6-12, and will be held on-site at LSNC, 1831 Traver Rd, Ann Arbor, MI, 48105, on Saturday, October 4 from 5:00-9:00 p.m.

From a date night to an evening of quiet at home, Parents’ Night Out: Astronomy Adventure will give parents an evening to enjoy themselves while their children have fun learning about stars, constellations, galaxies, planets, the moon, and more.  Kids will enjoy a variety of activities including a night hike, learning the stories behind some of our constellations, playing astronomical games, and using LSNC’s telescope and binoculars to find objects in the sky (weather permitting).  Attendees will also have a pizza dinner and snack provided by LSNC.

LSNC’s Education Manager, Kathy Evans, said, “Our amazing education staff designed this program to help to celebrate the wonder that people feel when they stop and look up at the vast expanse of the night sky, inspiring kids who attend to learn more.” For centuries, people all over the world have been looking up at the night sky, trying to learn about the objects they could see, using the shapes and patterns of stars to illustrate stories and pass along information to others, and later using the stars for navigation. Today, people are doing less sky watching, in part because levels of artificial light make stars difficult to see in many areas. The night sky is a rewarding part of the natural world to watch throughout anyone’s life: it is always changing, and every season and year there offer something new to see.

This program will be held rain or shine; in the case of rain, a substitution will be made for the planned night sky viewing. As a night hike is included in the program, kids may get muddy. Appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather is essential, and a change of clothing as well as spare shoes may be a good idea if wet weather is indicated.

Susan Westhoff, LSNC’s Executive Director, proposed this series after hearing about “night at the museum” events held for children in Chicago and Denver. “As a mother to two curious, energetic children, I know how much fun they have together with other kids their age, exploring and enjoying nature. Events like Parents’ Night Out mean parents can re-connect and recharge while they know their children are safe, having adventures, learning about the world, and meeting new friends.” The second event in this program series, Parents’ Night Out: Creatures of the Night, will be held in March 2015; registration is already available at or by calling 734-997-1553.

Please join us for Parents’ Night Out: Astronomy Adventure on Saturday, October 4 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Leslie Science & Nature Center, 1831 Traver Road, Ann Arbor, MI, 48105. Registration is $30 per child; LSNC Members receive a discounted rate of $25 per child – membership is $50 annually, includes your entire immediate family, and confers discounts on LSNC rentals, camps, and many programs.
