Making Our Way Home Signing

For more than 10 years, Ann Arbor with Kids has been a reliable source of information for our community. We will continue to provide updates on events and activities that are open under government guidelines. This does not constitute an endorsement or a suggestion that we jump back into a “normal” way of life. Masks are encouraged if you are out in public spaces. During this time we encourage everyone to be informed and do what they feel is best for their own family. Where readily available we have shared social distancing precautions being taken by the event organizers. Please follow up with them if you have any questions.

Event Description

ABOUT MAKING OUR WAY HOME:

Over the course of six decades, an unprecedented wave of Black Americans left the South and spread across the nation in search of a better life — a migration that sparked stunning demographic and cultural changes in twentieth-century America. Through gripping and accessible historical narrative paired with 40 illustrations, Making our Way Home explores issues like segregation and discrimination alongside the flourishing of arts and culture, activism and civil rights.

Imani shows how these influences shaped America’s workforce and wealth distribution by featuring the stories of notable people and events, relevant data, and family histories. The experiences of prominent figures such as James Baldwin, Fannie Lou Hamer, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz (Malcolm X), Ella Baker, and others are woven into the larger historical and cultural narratives of the Great Migration to create a truly singular record of this powerful journey.

This book will be available at each signing, so be sure to come on down and check it out!
