SUMMARY:Japan Week | The Sounds of Japan
DESCRIPTION:\nThis program introduces the traditional Japanese instruments 
 koto (a 13-string zither) and shamisen (a three-string lute). The concert 
 presents a wide range of music\, from time-honored pieces passed down thro
 ugh generations to contemporary works\, highlighting the richness of Japan
 ese culture and its connection to the present day.&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nAudience 
 participation is encouraged throughout the program\, with opportunities to
  sing along or clap to the rhythm\, creating a shared musical experience.&
 nbsp\;\n\n\n\nFollowing the performance\, the group will hold a musical in
 strument playing experience. They will also introduce traditional Japanese
  crafts\, providing an opportunity for you to gain a deeper understanding 
 of Japanese culture through music and hands-on experiences.\n\n\n\nMiyabi 
 Koto Shamisen Ensemble is a New York-based group founded and headed by Ms
 . Masayo Ishigure. The ensemble consists of members of the Sawai Koto Acad
 emy\, which is one of the most prominent schools for contemporary Koto and
  Shamisen music.\n\n\n\nThis concert is for all ages!\n\n\n\nThis event is
  part of Japan Week in partnership with the University of Michigan's Ce
 nter for Japanese Studies.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
