SUMMARY:Exploring the Mind | Defining Psychopathology in Children and Adole
scents: The Critical Importance of Developmental and Environmental Context
 s
DESCRIPTION:\nHow are judgments made about the presence of psychopathology
in children and adolescents? This is a foundational and controversial issu
e in clinical science that has strong implications for clinical practice a
nd everyday life. Dr. Sheryl Olson discusses current criteria that are use
d to define psychopathology in children and adolescents\, highlighting the
importance of developmental issues and the child’s lived experiences in
different environmental settings\, including diverse cultures. She gives
brief examples from her own research\, which has focused on early developm
ental contributions to psychopathology\, and more recently\, how parents i
n different cultural settings define\, explain\, and manage challenging be
haviors in their young children. Finally\, she shows how current practices
fail to incorporate developmental and contextual issues into their diagno
stic criteria\, with potentially adverse consequences for children\, famil
ies\, and their broader communities.\n\n\n\nDr. Sheryl Olson&nbsp\;is Prof
essor of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research has focuse
d on the early childhood origins of disruptive behavior problems\, highlig
hting complex transactions between self-regulation and social-cognitive di
fficulties experienced by the child and adverse relationships among family
and peers. She has a long history of conducting studies that trace childr
en’s early behavioral development over time\, most notably a 19-year pro
spective study of the development of aggressive and impulsive behavior (th
e Michigan Longitudinal Study). Dr. Olson also has examined early emotion
regulation difficulties in different cultural settings (U.S.\, China\, and
Japan)\, integrating biological\, behavioral\, and social assessments of
preschool-age children and their functioning.&nbsp\; Her current studies f
eature assessments of parents’ beliefs about the nature\, causes\, and m
anagement of challenging behaviors in young children growing up in North A
 merica\, Spain\, China\, and Malaysia.\n\n\n\nThis event is in partnership
with the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan.\n\n\n\n\
