NOTE THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURRED
Washtenaw Farm Council Fairgrounds
5055 Ann Arbor Saline Rd, Ann Arbor
The 4-H Youth Show/Fair is this week.
Growing up I had heard of 4-H but had no exposure to it whatsoever. But then one year I was visiting my sister in a suburb of Indianapolis during the week of the 4-H gathering. When we drove by and saw all the animals and kids we knew we had to stop.
My initial reaction was: OH MY GOODNESS! So many animals. A petting zoo on steroids! And tractors!!!
Well…I knew that 4-H fair was going to be a new staple in my life and life of my kids.
Check out Sarah’s review of the 2017 4-H Youth Show
The fair is always held the 4th Sunday of July and runs through the following Friday.
So for 2019 that means Sunday July 21-Friday July 26th.
There are so many showings, judgings, and auctions of livestock that the hours are super generous. Every day it is open from 8am-9pm (hurrah, that means working parents can go with their kids too!)
Admission (and Parking) are FREE!
Food & Drink
The Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds have a kitchen where they serve food every day. And ALL the proceeds go to scholarships for 4-H kids. And speaking of these hard working guys… they are there early and stay late so the kitchen has a wide variety of options to keep them all going.
Note: Food & Drink purchases are CASH ONLY.
There are all sorts of animals at the 4-H fair: alpacas, goats, sheep, pigs, cattle, chickens, rabbits, and more.
My rules for my kids around the animals: Be cautious and courteous. It is usually ok to pet the animals but it is polite to do this only if you see the owner there and can ask permission. Some animals also like to nibble little fingers or may have an excited temperament that you might not know about so be careful.
Do NOT bring food to give the animals. This can make them sick. Sometimes you will pass an owner during a feeding time but it is polite not to ask to participate. Humans can carry germs/bacteria that can be harmful to the animal or it puts the owner in an awkward position. It is better to just watch and, if appropriate, pet but not feed the animals.
Thursday there is a MAKE-AND-TAKE Activity at the activity tent from 9am-12pm
