Is your child looking for a new hairstyle for summer? Last week I spoke with Ilze, owner of Zoey + Joey Hair Studio, to find out the current kids summer hair trends. I also asked her advice on summer hair care.

Boys Hair Styles

The top requested boys hair style at Zoey + Joey is a Gentleman’s Cut. At least half of their customers are requesting this style. The Gentleman’s Cut is very reminiscent of 1950s styles. A Gentleman’s Cut features a hard part that is cut into to enlarge a natural part line. The style is longer on top on the big side and shorter on the small side. The cut then fades on the sides and back down to a 1 guard, the shortest of trimmers. The hair is styled with gel to get a side sweep on the long side.

Girls Hair Styles

Short hair is becoming more popular with girls, particularly among those ages 10+. Two classic short cuts are a pixie cut and a bob. I can personally vouch for the popularity of short hair among girls. My daughter opted for a variation of the bob in late March. She mentioned needing to go back to get it cut again.

Bangs have also fallen out of favor with many moms. They don’t want to deal with the hassle of growing them out at a later date. I know I personally avoided them for my daughter for that reason (and the need for frequent trims).

Color is currently a huge trend in kids hair styles – for both boys and girls. The most popular options are streaks and tips. Multi-colored hairstyles are also popular.

Summer Hair Trends - Multi-Color Streaks

Zoey + Joey uses two different types of temporary hair color. They tend to use a spray in color for girls (long hair) and a gel to use on boys (or short hair). Hair color can be added to a cut for $7. Without a cut, hair color application is $10. The gel they use (Zach’s Wax) is available for purchase to use at home. Their hair colors are natural and don’t use harsh chemicals. With a daughter who swims a lot, I definitely appreciate that they are not bleaching the hair. I worry about how bleach and permanent dye would react with the continuous chlorine exposure.

Summer Hair Care

Swimming frequently over the summer can be very harsh on kids hair. When I was a kid, my blonde hair would start to look a bit green with the chlorine. While my daughter’s hair is brown and didn’t look green, it definitely felt coarse and damaged.

Ilze offered a few tips to help limit chlorine damage.

  • Wet your hair before you get in with fresh water. This closes the hair shaft and decreases the amount of chlorine the hair absorbs.
  • You can also use a conditioner before getting in the water. The conditioner also provides sun protection for your hair.

For treating chlorine damaged hair, Zoey + Joey offers a Malibu Treatment. There is a special treatment crystals that are used to make a paste to remove the buildup of chlorine and minerals. The treatment can be added to a haircut for $10 or it is available as a standalone treatment for $20 with a blow-dry. Ilze recommends treating the hair a few times over the summer and not just waiting for the end of the season.

Zoey + Joey also sells the Malibu line of shampoo, conditioner, and treatment for home use.
