Summer Movies Inspire Summer Reading Recommendations

Summer is known as both a great movie season and a time for summer reading. This week’s Summer Reading Recommendations focuses on books which have inspired the movies. With Disney’s BFG opening this week it seemed like a perfect time to explore books that have inspired both movies opening soon and those that are showing in the Dollar Movies.

Movies Coming Soon

BFG by Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl has written so many wonderful books that have been made into movies – Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, James & the Giant Peach, and more. This summer, The BFG joins the group. Kids can read all about the Big Friendly Giant before seeing the movie. The BFG is recommended for grades 3-7.

Don’t miss these other Roald Dahl books that have been made into movies.

Tarzan has been portrayed on the big screen numerous times. He is returning this summer in a portrayal by Alexander Skarsgård. Before seeing the movie, I recommend tweens and teens read the original source material.

Movies with Upcoming Events

Jurassic Park

Jurassic World is playing at Top of the Park on Thursday, June 30th. The movie is a sequel to Jurassic Park and Lost World which were based on books by Michael Crichton. The books are best for a high school audience or advanced middle school students.

Horton Hears a Who

This week’s Dollar Movie at Quality 16 is Horton Hears a Who based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same name.

As far as I’m concerned, you can never go wrong with a a Dr. Seuss picture book.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Quality 16’s Dollar Movie for July 31-August 6 is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My daughter absolutely loves these books. She has read all of the books in the series – most multiple times. If your middle reader hasn’t tried the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, I definitely recommend them.
