Today the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum officially opened Delta Dental’s Chew On This! They invited me to attend this morning’s Floss Cutting Ceremony. After the ceremony, I was able to tour the new exhibit.
About Chew on This!
Delta Dental’s Chew on This! was developed by Impression 5 in Lansing to be a traveling exhibit. Ann Arbor is the first stop on it’s tour after Impression 5. It will be at the Hands-On Museum until December 2017.
As part of their sponsorship of the exhibit, the Delta Dental Foundation is providing $20,000 for student visits to the exhibit. Through this grant, students from Ann Arbor’s Dicken Elementary attended the Floss Cutting ceremony.
Chew on This! Exhibit
The highlight of the exhibit is the giant lower jaw with teeth that kids can floss and brush. The giant mouth features tooth and gum problems for kids to see at a large scale. With XRay and MRI samples, kids can see how the mouth functions.
A microscope allows them to look at a tooth up close. Personally, I loved the market. In the market kids can select different items for a shopping basket of foods. Then, they scan each item. Once they are done, they get an oral health score for their basket. They can even select an individual item to see it’s contribution to the score.

Chew on This! exhibit at Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum
Okemos, Michigan — Elementary students from across Michigan will experience the wonders of the human mouth and learn about oral health at Delta Dental’s Chew on This! em>exhibit at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. The exhibit will open to the public on February 2.
The Delta Dental Foundation also committed $20,000 in field trip grants to pre-K to fourth grade classrooms.
“Good oral health is closely linked to overall health and school and life success. That’s why teaching children at an early age about taking care of their teeth and mouths is so important,” said Teri Battaglieri, Director for the Delta Dental Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum in order to give thousands of children an outlet to learn about oral health in a fun and enriching setting.”
The Chew on This! exhibit allows students to clean giant teeth with larger-than-life dental instruments, operate a mini video camera to take a peek inside their mouths, make healthy food choices at the Smart Mart and view MRI images to watch the mechanics of the mouth.
Chew on This! was created by Lansing’s Impression 5 Science Center. Since 2014, the Delta Dental Foundation has awarded 48 field trip grants, allowing thousands of students to visit the exhibit in Lansing. Chew On This! will be on loan to Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum through December 2017.
“Generous support from Delta Dental Foundation made it possible for the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum to bring this informative and engaging traveling exhibit to our guests,” said Mel Drumm, executive director, Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. “Finding new ways to inspire people of all ages to think about the world around them is central to our mission; any time we can inspire thinking about how to achieve life-long good health is a terrific win for the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and our guests.”
