Where to Go Sledding Near Ann Arbor

Rolling Hills County Park

Rolling Hills is the most established sledding hill in the Ann Arbor area. They have a rental room, lights for night sledding, and roped off lanes making a return path that is relatively easy to safely climb – without the risk of being hit by a sledder.

The rental room offers tube rentals – making one of the closest options for snow tubing near Ann Arbor! They used to offer toboggans, but it appears they no longer have toboggans for rent. The rental room also offers skis for cross country skiing.

They have a great parking lot right near the top of the hill!

There is an entry fee to enter Rolling Hills ($10/county resident). But we often purchase an annual pass ($45/calendar year) to visit the water park, so it doesn’t cost us extra. Additionally, we have found the park entrance gate not always attended during the winter.

Note the Rental Room does not open when it is below 13F. Park closes at dusk on these days.

Leslie Science & Nature Center

The big hill behind Leslie Science and Nature Center is great for sledding. My daughter’s impression was that the hill was shorter but steeper than other hills (even though the photo below makes it look flat)

And as a bonus you can visit the outdoor raptor enclosures.

Huron Hills Golf Course

Huron Hills Golf Course offers a variety of hills throughout the golf course on the west side of Huron River Dr. In general, Huron Hills has smaller hills but there are a lot of these bunny hills which allows you to spread out from other sledders. I also liked that the parking is at the bottom of the hill and you don’t have to walk back up after your last run.

At Home

We have a tiny hill in our backyard which is perfect for my daughter when it is still snowing and road conditions are not good. (It also allows me to stay indoors).

Other Ann Arbor Sledding Hills

A few times I have suggested trying out new hills, but my husband prefers to go with the known (and the proximity to home helps). This winter I think we will give some other hills a try. Note, sledding hills at schools should only be used when schools and before/after care are not in session

Slauson Middle School

Several readers mentioned the hill at Slauson Middle School (1019 W. Washington St).

Buhr Park

Several readers also discussed Buhr Park (2751 Packard Rd) as a place to go sledding. From what I understand, the hill is better for younger children.

Leslie Park

Leslie Park has a sledding hill as well. However, one of our readers has recommended not trying to drive to it without a 4WD. Several cars were stuck in a December 2016 storm.

Ann Arbor Open School

Ann Arbor Open School (920 Miller Ave) has two hills that offer sledding fun. Mack Pool is attached to the school and when it is open the bathrooms are available. As an Ann Arbor Open alumnae, my daughter also recommends this – when school is not in session.

Northside School (A2STEAM)

When we visited Leslie Science & Nature Center, we drove by Northside and there were some people sledding in front of the school.

Beyond Ann Arbor

Sometimes the snow just misses Ann Arbor, but hits other parts of the Detroit Metro Area. Check out Metro Detroit Mommy for 5 great hills in other parts of the metro area.
