It’s the first week of summer vacation. That means great events like Top of the Park and the Ann Arbor Jaycees Carnival. Plus the kickoff of summer fun at the Ann Arbor Library, Hands-On Museum, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, and more.
Did you know we also offer an automated daily newsletter that is sent at 8a daily when there are new articles on the site and includes events for the day. There are two subscription options for this newsletter –
- The School Break option is only sent in summer and extended school breaks
- Daily is sent year round.
Sign up for the School Break Newsletter if you want to receive the daily newsletter during the summer. Add the weekly option to receive Arbor Annie’s picks on Thursday and Sunday evenings before they are published on the site.

Arbor Annie’s Weekday Picks
The weather this week is a bit more summer like than the weekend. Temperatures are back to the 70s and there is a bit less rain in the forecast.
Top of the Park continues this week (except for Monday). Be sure to check out our Top of the Park Kids Guide for the daily schedule, tips for attending, and more. This week’s Kid Zone activites are Origami, Calligraphy, Puppets, and More on Tuesday, the popular Mo Willems series Elephant and Piggie Series on Wednesday, Japan Week: Games from Around the World on Thursday, and Around the World with American Field Service.
On Wednesday the Ann Arbor Jaycees Carnival starts. It’s an annual tradition for us to attend. They are hosting us this year so that we can share all of the fun with you. Be on the lookout for our roundup and a video walkthrough.
Lots of summer event series start this week. Matthaei Botanical Gardens starts their Summer Children’s Garden Pop-Ups on Monday. Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is doing a Summer of Space and also adding extra workshops. The Ann Arbor District Library has a full slate of fun events all week long.
Strawberry picking should still be great this week. I am hoping to get out one day this week.
I enjoyed the Peony Garden last week, but couldn’t get my daughter to visit on Friday afternoon. She has a cold on top of allergies so she didn’t want to make the allergies worse.
It is also Japan Week. There are several fun events all week. Last year my daughter enjoyed Japan Week: Japanese Video Games which is on Monday. Other good choices are Japan Week: Family Art Studio: The Six Senses of Buddhism on Thursday plus the Center for Japanese Studies has the KidsZone Tent at Top of the Park.

Summer Movie Series continue this week at Quality 16 and Emagine plus the Cinemark series starts. Quality 16 is showing Smallfoot (Monday-Friday). Emagine is showing Despicable Me (Wednesday & Thursday) and Cinemark is showing The Grinch (Tuesday).
The local pools, water parks, and spray grounds are open regular hours this week – pending the weather. If you have little ones, the Tot Splashes are a great time to visit.
