Ann Arbor Strawberry Picking

Strawberry picking is a great activity with kids. The bushes are low to the ground. It is also pretty easy for young kids to tell when the berries are ripe.

We have picked strawberries many times at Rowe’s Produce Farm in Ypsilanti. My daughter was only 3 on our first Rowe’s strawberry picking trip. When she was in kindergarten, she declared strawberry picking more fun than recess.

Are you looking for organic strawberries near us? Both Slow Farm in Whitmore Lake and Honey Bee U-Pick from Tantre Farm are organic strawberry farms that use organic farming techniques, or no-spray berries.

Strawberry Picking Tips

After strawberry picking a few times, we have a few tips to share for newbies.

What to wear for strawberry picking in Michigan:

  • Sunscreen
  • A Hat
  • Long pants or tall socks/boots
  • Closed toe shoes or boots – not flip-flops or sandals

What to bring for strawberry picking in Ann Arbor and beyond:

  • Water bottles: They will provide hydration and let you rinse a few berries for sampling
  • Insect repellent: We never had an issue with mosquitos at Rowe’s. But I like to be prepared, especially with a bad tick season
  • Cash: Not all farms take credit. Some will take cash only, others have card readers but they may be unreliable in the field.

Best Times for Upick Strawberries Near You

  • Weekdays are typically less crowded. At Rowe’s we once waited over an hour in our car to go through checkout on a Saturday.
  • Mornings are cooler – and may be less crowded
  • Watch the farm update pages for updates on picking conditions. It is best to pick at peak season, although they may be more crowded.
